To wrap this one up with a satisfactory conclusion: experimentation on the 
OP's system showed that there was a /usr/local/include/syslog.h -- origin 
unknown -- which was causing the problem. So his compile worries are over. 
Other folks with similar systems might want to look around for an errant 
syslog.h as well.
