I would suggest that you discuss this on:

There currently is a way to do what you want but it is not that simple.

If you track down the actual 'desktop' file for the application (in the 
menu) and open it with RMB "Properties", under the "Application" tab, you 
can add MIME types directly to the application.

So, it appears that what needs to be fixed is that there needs to be some 
way to do this without having to track down the 'desktop' file.

My suggestion is that you should be able to RMB the application in KMenu 
and the widget would appear just as if you had tracked down the 'desktop' 
file and used RMB Properties to open the widget.  There is a slight 
disadvantage here that this would only affect the options for that user, 
but that is the way the KDE works.  The lack of a GUI to set global options 
  and menu configuration is another issue.

alternatively, you might have to open the menu in a KCM module and LMB the 
item that you wanted to configure -- like "Add => Application Button" to 
the panel works.
