Just an idea.

As the fish: kio seems to use only the magic and not the extensions (which can 
be a problem as reported), may be you should look at the fish: and see how it 
overrides the standard extension recognition.

Also as far as I know, http: gets the mime type from the server. You could 
look at this code too.
