IIUC, one of the things which is missing is the ability to deal with fonts 
which are not embedded and which the user does not have on his system.

The way which Adobe Acrobat reader deals with these is that if first 
determines if the fonts are serif or sans serif.  It comes with two 
multi-master fonts (one serif and one sans serif) and then makes a font 
with the same font metrics (single axis width only I think [bold and italic 
can be simulated the usual way]) as the missing font.

OTOH, if it is a specialty font that is missing, I have no idea what happens.

I'll build the current version and see how it works.
