So why would  "creating a file or directory" not work?

A table could be a directory and an entry could be a file, or something 
like that.

Its the expected behaviour of a filesystem and kioslaves present their 
source as a filesystem if I am not mistaken.

You have to come up with an abtraction that is usable anyway, independend 
if you can popup a dialog for the logon data.
An additonal /databasename at the start of the "filepath" does not make it 
any more complex, does it?
