One thing that you miss here, that for more complex applications, there may be 
other data files aside of the ui.rc and without installation or the tricks 
with KDEDIRS/linking you cannot really test it. For simpler applications, 
that need the ui.rc file only, this may be an annoyance, but I really think 
it's a small one. 
 BTW, have you ever tried to install a KDE application to another dir, not 
where the KDE is, and run it, without setting the KDEDIRS correctly? Now, 
this one is a bigger problem. Of course there are solution to make your 
application work even in this case.
