Hi all,
I've been expecting something like this to happen for some time now, but it
does seem to me that what RedHat is doing is really trying to destroy the
popularity of KDE more than anything. I've put forward some proposals for
an official KDE distributions a number of times, but perhaps my concept was
a bit more difficult to implement than I thought, so I have an alternate
proposal and all it really requires is a few volunteers to create spec
files, let me explain (I'm not subscribed to kde-devel any more, so either
reply privately or CC me privately if you wish to discuss it).
Since we have to package our software to work on various versions of KDE
and linux distros and versions, we built a system we call Jane that has
about 10 different distros on it, various versions of the popular ones, we
try to have the current release and 1 or 2 releases back typically. We
have a very cool technology that we built that will take a source tarball
with the spec files for building in each of those distros in it and go
through and build them all automatically, at the end you will get a set of
rpms for each distro for each thing you've built. If someone is willing to
create and maintain those spec files for the various pieces that need to be
included for each distro/version, then we can use our build system and
technology to create packages for all the various distros that we
support. This way KDE would make the packages, and not the distros. So
now when people complain that RedHat has a fubarred KDE we can point them
to the "official" KDE package (hosted by KDE).
*Someone* just needs to decide what version of Qt, KDE, gcc, etc., make up
this official version.
We aren't asking anything for this (although if IBM wants to donate a more
powerful server to speed things up we wouldn't say no :). My interest lies
totally in the fact that I want to have a stable and consistent KDE and I
don't want to see it go away because it is such a terrific application.
So that is the general principal. I'm interested in constructive feedback
and discussion about pulling this off. Seems like a fairly moderate amount
of work (maintaining spec files, and of course debian).

Shawn Gordon
