not to mention that the libraries remain binary compatible and pretty much 
source compat across minor releases. that is primarily what matters to a 
third party devel: binary and source compat.

obviously kde2 was fairly short in its life-span, and everyone knows why. 

but kde3 was released early enough and with enough going for it that it should 
be able to last for a more appropriate period of time before a source/binary 
compat breaking kde4 is needed and appears.
