Yes, this is an interesting problem. I think it very difficult to solve it 
The Right Way (tm). What can be done is not saving any entries as long as 
they are the same as the default. That should give 98% of the benefits with 
1% of the effort.

We can already set settings back to "default" by deleting the entries in a 
clumsy sort of way. This certainly has to be made easier though. 

I also want to provide the possibility to "lock" certain settings to the 
default, e.g. so that they can't be overriden by user config files.
