What can be done is not saving any entries as long as they are the same as the default. That should give 98% of the benefits with 1% of the effort. We can already set settings back to "default" by deleting the entries in a clumsy sort of way. This certainly has to be made easier though. I also want to provide the possibility to "lock" certain settings to the default, e.g. so that they can't be overriden by user config files.
