In your case you could turn it into a cool GUI design in this way:
If the user wants to "start the application" pixie, it should start with
an empty GUI (to be conform with most other desktop apps).
If the user "starts a picture" (maybe by a click on file in konqueror),
it could/(should)/may start the picture widget without GUI. As it is
currently.
