Difficult but maybe worth it in this case.  If the main IPC communications
mechanism is bloated and slow, people will not use it, and those that do
will suffer from apps that perform very badly.  If we don't lose much
functionality, it would seem the logical thing to do.  We could even take
the mm library as a starting point if we want to create an abstract
interface to the IPC.
