Recompiling now, and switching to a KDE_3_2_BRANCH Kopete for the moment.
Will do some testing with the person who caused me to notice this bug, but
it didn't seem to happen *all* the time which makes debugging a lot harder.

Olivier's explanation sounds like he's on to something though.
