Thank you for looking into this. Here's what I did:

I noticed I'd never gotten this "image index"-thing to work, or really understood \
what it was supposed to do. There is apparently no help page for it. So I added some \
folders and tried the "Search for Similar Images..." option. The crash mentioned \
followed. (The suspicious line you mention is often there in my BTs, and I didn't \
change anything at the time.)

I then tried to find some more information, and after some digging realized that this \
is probably a front end to something called Gift (not to be confused with several \
other things called Gift), though it doesn't say so. Gentoo doesn't have a Gift \
package. The newest version from the Gift website didn't compile, but CVS did. But I \
never got it running, there was some incomprehensible error, and I gave up soon \
after.

I guess my points here are:

1) It shouldn't crash, no matter what.
2) It should tell me that it needs Gift, where to put which Gift files and so on.
3) If Gift isn't running, the "Search for Similar Images..." option shouldn't be \
shown.
