my apologies for bugging you instead of RedHat. I've tried bugging them a few
times without getting any help whatsoever. and thank for for the very swift reply!

$ locate kword.desktop
/usr/share/applications/kword.desktop
/usr/share/mimelnk/application/x-kword.desktop
/usr/share/services/kprkword.desktop

the only things in /usr/share/applnk/ are:

$ ls /usr/share/applnk/
Multimedia  Settings

somewhere along the line consistency seems have left the building. the best
advice I could get from searching RedHats bugzilla was from than@redhat.com:

# please try to download kde 3.1.1 and koffice-1.2.1 from ftp.kde.org. It should
# fix this problem

<url: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=86479 >, that comment
closed the bug.

of course, grabbing the KDE-created builds will break BlueCurve and probably
other things that our users have been getting used to over the last three weeks
since we had to upgrade to RedHat 8.0. sigh. anyhow, thank you for great
products, it's just extremly frustrating that distributions feel the need to
break it for you.
