The Overlays will be generated in the background. So you first get the whole 
directory shown and are already able to work while the overlays pop up one by 
one. Of course this will still cost some performance but the feature is 
disabled by default and you can always enable/disable it yourself.

Do you use KDE 3.0 already? Did you ever try KPersonalizer?
