Our friend Doug and his questionable statements aside, I too experience, as
Clifford does, the same crashing of KDE on Mandrake 6.0, totally at random,
with the same symptom of all of my desktop icons blacking out. At this point
the system will not let me run any applications, and a normal logout will
freeze at the preparing session message. I too cannot simply restart x, it
takes a full reboot to "clear the system". I did not get this problem with RH
6.0, or RH 5.2, or SuSE 6.0. I guess the question is why did I "upgrade" to
Mandrake 6.0, when it is essentially RH 6.0 with slightly later kernel version
(2.2.5 in RH, 2.2.9 in Mandrake) and some extra KDE configuring out of the box?
Who knows, but I probably would have been alot better off upgrading the kernel
in RH 6.0, and tweaking my own KDE config. Live and learn...I'm going back to
RH 6.0, unless someone comes up with a fix for the Mandrake install...
