I used RPM to install KDE.  I didn't have to compile anything, or worry about
libraries that were missing, and it worked in about 5 minutes.  Maybe in a
couple of years when I am good at Linux I will consider installing everything
with tarballs.

Please forgive me :-(

Also, remember that not everyone who uses Linux is a computer scientist or
SA, so RPM makes it easy to install enough stuff to make it work so that we
can spend many frustrating hours pouring over mailing lists  and HOW-TOs and
other Linux books to figure out how to compile the stuff that isn't in RPM
format.
