Well, that's the exact problem I had.  I don't know _which_ app-default
caused the problem, but I know it's one of them.  What I did to
demonstrate that was to move the whole KDE app-defaults directory out
of the way, then restart the X server and KDE.  Aterm then worked more
normally (although as I stated I was not able to get background shading to
work right even then).

My suggestion would be to experiment with moving various KDE app-default
files out of that directory, restarting X after each one and seeing which
one causes the problem.  First guess would be the Xterm file, since I
figure that's the most likely to contain resources read by Aterm.

The restarting X is important, here.  It's the cleanest way to make sure
that none of the resources set by KDE's trying to apply its app-defaults
are still hanging around.
