Let me prefix this by saying I've only JUST setup Cyrus in a test
envrionment that has a LONG way to go before being a production environmetn.
Ie I am no expert by any means but have been doing a LOT of reading of late.

Yes.

In my case, the later, each domain would be limited to a particular backend
server so to my understanding would work as is with user@domain.com style
logins.

Fortunately, as yet, I have no need to provide IP based virtual domains.

That's the one I want. :)

Could anyone (Ken) perhaps give me an idea of when an official release of
Cyrus that supports this might be made available?

I need to create a setup asap but at the same time the support of
virtdomains is a feature I'd LOVE to include. As mentioned I have a test
setup that has a LONG way to go so I'm wondering if it would be worth me
working off the CVS code while it's still a test environment. Ie perhaps it
will be final before my test environment is anyway.

NOTE: The Murder support wouldn't be essential to me to begin with so I'm
assuming I could work with the code as it stands in CVS.
