[001] - 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons Character Generator 2.9
  by Slicer (http://freshmeat.net/users/slicer/)
  Sun, Dec 11th 2005 08:06

Games/Entertainment :: Role-Playing

About: 3rd Edition Dungeons and Dragons Character Generator is an
HTML/JavaScript Web page that allows the user to quickly and easily create
new Dungeons and Dragons characters. The characters can be of any of the
eleven classes, any of the playable races, and may start at any level from
1 to 220. Generation requires some simple input, after which the character
is displayed on a basic character sheet. It allows you to select your
starting stats, add ability points, and pick skills, equipment, feats, and
spells. It runs on most operating systems with most modern browsers.

Changes: This release makes it easier to buy equipment, especially
masterwork items. There are also a number of minor bugfixes, and the FAQs
have been updated.

[002] - Accelerando 0.5
  by Ben Crowell (http://freshmeat.net/users/bcrowell/)
  Sun, Dec 11th 2005 16:27

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio

About: Accelerando is a musical metronome that can speed up, allowing you
to practice your music at progressively faster tempos. For example, you
could set it to play 60 beats per minute for 4 bars, then automatically
speed up by 10 beats per minute, and so on.

Changes: A maximum tempo can be set. The tempo will then approach this
limit more and more closely without ever going faster than the maximum.

About: anymeal is a cookbook database front-end. It can handle more than
100,000 recipes, and can search recipes for a given set of ingredients. It
is designed to be lean and flexible.

Changes: This version now supports fractions as well as floating point
numbers for amounts of ingredients. For example, instead of saying
"2.33333 liter water", you can now use "2 1/3 liter water".

[005] - avidemux 2.1.0
  by mean99 (http://freshmeat.net/users/mean99/)
  Sun, Dec 11th 2005 08:08

Multimedia :: Video :: Non-Linear Editor

About: Avidemux is a graphical tool to edit videos. It can open AVI,
openDML, MPEG, Nuppelvideo, and BMPs. Most common codecs are supported
(M-JPEG, MPEG, DivX, Xvid, huffyuv, WMA, etc.) thanks to libavcodec and
libmpeg2. Video can be edited, cut, appended, filtered
(resize/crop/denoise), and re-encoded to either AVI (MPEG4/MJPEG) or MPEG
1/2. The Spidermonkey Javascript engine is used to give powerful scripting
capabilities.

Changes: This is the final version of the 2.1.0 branch. The main
differences compared to the 2.0.x series are a new MPEG demuxer, the
ability to switch audio tracks, some new filters, better Mac OS X support,
better 64-bit support, better Win32 support, the use of scripting through
libjs (JavaScript/ECMAscript), and better support for MOV/MP4, including
AAC and H264.

[007] - Birch Photoblog 1.3
  by Ross Harmes (http://freshmeat.net/users/rharmes/)
  Sun, Dec 11th 2005 13:16

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: News/Diary

About: Birch is a package of Perl scripts that runs a photo blog. It
displays and archives photos with captions, and has an easy to use
administrator interface that allows you to upload new photos and change
the captions on old ones. It uses an XML file to store the photo
information, so no database is needed. The installation page automates
setup for you.

Changes: This release adds the ability to have custom photo sizes. A
script has been created that will update the photos.xml file to the new
format, with width and height tags.

[008] - BitTorrent 4.3.2 (Beta)
  by Moritz Barsnick (http://freshmeat.net/users/barsnick/)
  Sun, Dec 11th 2005 16:16

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
System :: Software Distribution

About: BitTorrent is a tool for copying files from one machine to another.
FTP punishes sites for being popular. Since all uploading is done from one
place, a popular site needs big iron and big bandwidth. With BitTorrent,
clients automatically mirror files they download, making the publisher's
burden almost nothing.

Changes: A command line option for testing auto-update was added. Correct
BitTorrent icons are assured for all windows. Gzip support, which was
broken by the recent "--bind" fix, was revived. Broken error handling code
was removed.

  Sun, Dec 11th 2005 21:00

Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors
Scientific/Engineering
Text Processing :: Markup :: TeX/LaTeX

About: cb2Bib is a tool for rapidly extracting unformatted bibliographic
references from email alerts, journal Web pages, and PDF files. It
facilitates the capture of single references from unformatted sources.
References are written in BibTeX. A PDF file with the article text, if
available, can be easily linked and renamed by dragging it onto the
cb2Bib window. Reference manager applications can later retrieve,
import, and display these BibTeX references.

Changes: The BibTeX parser considers non-bracket, single word
bibliographic entries. An edit menu has been added in the BibTeX editor.
It permits setting the active LyX pipe. The network configuration file
netqinf.txt has been updated. Its syntax now permits HTML POST commands.

  Sun, Dec 11th 2005 21:21

Communications :: BBS
Communications :: Chat
Communications :: Email

About: Citadel is an advanced messaging and collaboration system for
groupware and BBS applications. Users can connect to Citadel using any
telnet, WWW, or client software. Among the features supported are public
and private message bases (rooms), electronic mail, real-time chat,
paging, shared calendaring, address books, mailing lists, and more. Unlike
other collaboration servers, Citadel provides its own data stores and is
therefore extremely easy to install; you don't have to "bring your own"
email and database because they're built in. The server is multithreaded
and scalable. In addition, SMTP, IMAP, and POP3 servers are built-in for
easy connection to Internet mail. Citadel is both robust and mature; it
has been in production since 1987.

Changes: This is a minor update to provide some additional protocol
functionality for handling of Trash folders. It was put in place to
support the functionality of a major WebCit upgrade which is expected a
few days from now.

[018] - dvbcut 0.5.2
  by Sven Over (http://freshmeat.net/users/svenor/)
  Sun, Dec 11th 2005 16:23

Multimedia :: Video

About: dvbcut is a Qt application that allows you to select certain parts
of an MPEG transport stream (as received via Digital Video Broadcasting)
and save these parts into a single MPEG output file. It follows a "keyhole
surgery" approach where the input video and audio data are mostly kept
unchanged, and only very few frames at the beginning and/or end of the
selected range are re-encoded in order to obtain a valid MPEG file.

Changes: AC3 support has been added, and usability has been improved.
Apart from the libavformat multiplexers, this release comes with its own
multiplexer that should write DVD-compliant MPEG program streams.

[020] - Enblend 2.5
  by Andrew Mihal (http://freshmeat.net/users/mihal/)
  Sun, Dec 11th 2005 04:25

Multimedia :: Graphics

About: Enblend is a postprocessing tool for creating panoramic images.
After you align image features using a program like Hugin, there are often
photometric problems that lead to ugly seams in the final composite.
Enblend blends away these seams using a multiresolution spline. This
technique gives good results on both low spatial frequency objects (sky
and clouds) and high spatial frequency objects (trees and houses).

Changes: This release fixes bugs in version 2.4. An error when using the
-w parameter has been fixed, as well as an error where Enblend would say
"mask transition line bounding box undefined."

About: GeSHi is a generic syntax highlighter for PHP that takes any source
code and highlights it in XHTML and CSS. It features case-sensitive or
insensitive highlighting, auto-caps/non-caps of any keyword, an unlimited
scope for styling, the use of CSS in which almost any aspect of the source
can be highlighted, the use of CSS classes to massively reduce the amount
of output code, function-to-URL capabilities, line numbering, and much
more. Over 50 languages are supported, including Java, C, PHP, HTML, CSS,
SQL, Pascal, C++, XML, ASP, and ASM.

Changes: This release adds initial support for VHDL and Java, as well as
some significant advances in parsing ability and the ability to customize

[039] - K3DSurf 0.5.4 (Stable)
  by Abderrahman Taha (http://freshmeat.net/users/virtualmeet/)
  Sun, Dec 11th 2005 04:21

Multimedia :: Graphics
Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics

About: K3DSurf is a program for visualizing and manipulating
multidimensional surfaces by using Mathematical equations. It's also a
"modeler" for POV-Ray in the area of parametric surfaces. It features 3D,
4D, 5D, and 6D HyperObjects visualization, full support for all functions
(like the C language), support for mouse events in the drawing area,
animation and morph effects, Povscript and mesh file generation, and
support for VRML2 and OBJ files. More than 100 examples are provided.

Changes: Two new sections were added for 3D mathematical equation
modeling: deformers and builders. Deformers include two tools ("Scale" and
"Twist") which can be used, along with an existing mathematical model, to
apply certain deformations. The complexity of the generated equations
depends heavily on the number of steps. Builders include three tools
("Revolve", "Extrude" and "Loft") which can be used to build 3D shapes
from one or more 2D/3D curves. The possibility to show the shape's acute
part and its polygons' normals was added. The code was improved to remove
floating polygons.

  by CondorDes (http://freshmeat.net/users/condordes/)
  Sun, Dec 11th 2005 04:28

Information Management
System :: Filesystems

About: MetaFS allows users to access information about their files (such
as MP3 tags or JPEG EXIF tags) easily and consistently using extended
attributes. It also allows them to perform fast searches using this
information. It can be easily extended by writing plugins to support new
types of metadata and uses the FUSE library to act as a layer between
user programs and the filesystem, which allows indexes to be kept up-
to-date in realtime, and eliminates the need for a specialized metadata
API.

Changes: This release has two major new features: services and root
plugins. Services are alternate ways of looking at a file or directory.
For example, viewing a tarball as though it were a directory. Root plugins
allow MetaFS to get its filesystem data from whatever source you choose.
You are no longer limited to using a standard directory tree somewhere in
your filesystem. There are also many bugfixes and API changes.

Symantec's Web site, downloads them, and creates Microsoft Windows batch
files to automate the actualization process on Windows clients.

Changes: The configuration file has been changed to use the AppConfig
module. New parameters have been added to the nau.conf file. This release
can use the %WINDIR% variable in the netlogon.bat script. It can send
email using an SMTP server (with authentication). Global variables have
been removed. Temporary files are now created using the File::Temp module
(to avoid race conditions). This release has command line options,
including a help message when using the "-h" option.

[083] - Usepackage Environment Manager 1.8 (Stable)
  by Jonathan Hogg (http://freshmeat.net/users/hoggy/)
  Sun, Dec 11th 2005 13:06

Desktop Environment
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities

About: Usepackage is a tool for managing the Unix environment for a
multi-tool, multi-platform site. It is designed to simplify login scripts
and allow administrators to control users' environments centrally. This
tool should be considered primarily designed for sites where users have to
deal with a number of different tools, or versions of tools, that are
installed in different locations and require environment variables to be
set. This is particularly a problem for developers, or anyone who has to
manage a large toolset across multiple platforms (e.g. different versions
of the Sun JDK which require various environment variables to be set
correctly). One or more central configuration files control a number of
different "packages" and their associated environment and dependencies for
different platforms (this includes the standard PATH, MANPATH, and
LD_LIBRARY_PATH variables). A single user command, use, can be invoked to
source the appropriate environment information into the users' current
shell.

Changes: This release supports basic checking for the existence of
directories before adding them to a path (or setting a variable) using the
new "?=" and "?+=" operators. The order that variables are sourced into the
environment has been changed to better support using other variables as
parts of updates to the environment (e.g. "FOO=/opt/foo,
PATH+=$FOO/bin;").

duplicate entries from the word list (as long as the word list does not
contain duplicates itself). This simplifies the code, so custom word lists
may load and display faster than before.

[089] - x10 0.1.0

Software Development :: Compilers

About: X10 is a type-safe, modern, parallel, distributed object-oriented
language intended to be very easily accessible to Java programmers. It is
targeted to future low-end and high-end systems with nodes that are built
out of multi-core SMP chips with non-uniform memory hierarchies, and
interconnected in scalable cluster configurations. X10 highlights the
explicit reification of locality in the form of places; lightweight
activities embodied in async, future, foreach, and ateach constructs;
constructs for termination detection and phased computation; the use of
lock-free synchronization; and the manipulation of global arrays and data
structures.

Changes: This release adds support for almost all X10 constructs that are
not related to synchronization. In particular, array operations, region
operations, first-order functions, VARARGs, break and continue,
distributed parallel loops (foreach, ateach), pre- and post-increments,
conditional expressions, and operations on all of the primitive types that
correspond to Java's primitives have been implemented.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: XHP (eXpandable Home Page) is a personal home page program (CMS)
that is easy to install, easy to use, and easy to expand. It includes
blog, image gallery, content modules, and an API for contributed modules.
It tries to fill the lack of personal home-page oriented CMSs, since most
of the current CMSs are dedicated to the enterprise market or large
portals.

Changes: This version brings gettext support with translations in the most
common languages, many bugfixes, and improved documentation.
