Multimedia :: Graphics :: Editors :: Vector-Based

About: Arabeske is a special kind of vector drawing software. It has a
limited set of shapes but is extremely specialised towards complex
symmetric interlaced drawings, like those traditionally found in Arabic
architecture. It is not a texture editor, but rather a pattern generator.
It exports in EPS, PNG, and POV-Ray formats.

Changes: This service release fixes some minor storing and displaying
bugs.

[005] - CDemu Kernel Module for Linux 0.6-beta
  by Robert Penz (http://freshmeat.net/users/robertpenz/)
  Saturday, March 13th 2004 02:29

System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: CDemu (previously Virtual CD Kernel Module for Linux) is a kernel
module for Linux which can simulate a CD drive that contains a CD. It uses
simple cue/bin files as input for the data that should appear on the
virutal disc. It includes a user space program which controls the kernel
module. This is primarily useful for watching an SVCD or mounting the data
track of a bin/cue CD image without burning the data to a real CD.

Changes: The program can now be safely used on multi-user systems. Any
user can mount an image in an empty CDemu slot, and only the user (and
root) can unmount a slot already in use. A 2.4 threading patch for
avoiding locking issues that may fix SMP issues varying from lockups to
very poor performance is now also available, but has not received much
testing.

[006] - College Radio Database 0.9.8
  by Ray Shaw (http://freshmeat.net/users/autechre/)
  Saturday, March 13th 2004 12:43

About: The College Radio Database is Web-based software for radio
stations. It allows you to track large collections of CDs by unique ID,
assign status, do basic searches, and more. It also tracks airplay,
allowing easy entry of spins from the CD database, as well as entry of
DJ-supplied music. Top XX overall/by genre charts can be generated between
2 dates, and you can check up on DJ attendance, number of spins versus
station spins, and more. It also includes the ability to maintain DJ
schedules in table form for multiple semesters. This software has been in
use at WMBC Radio and evolving since the year 2000.

Changes: charts.php, the page to publicly display Top xx charts, was
accidentally excluded from the previous release. Additionally, a bug in
this file which caused relative CD date restriction to fail has been
fixed, and single quote escapes are now stripped before the charts are
displayed.

  by mastodon (http://freshmeat.net/users/mastodon/)
  Saturday, March 13th 2004 13:08

System :: Archiving :: Backup

About: Confstore is a configuration backup utility. It scans a system for
all recognised configuration files and then stores them in a simple
archive. It knows what to scan for by reading a definitions file.
Confstore can also restore configuration from backup archives it has
previously created.

Changes: FTP support has been added, so you can now upload archives to an
FTP server after creation. A "v" option has been added to the restore
process so the user can view the file in question before restoring it.
Certain prompts are now while loops, which prevents NULL values from being
passed. A new flag, -cf, has been added so users can specify a configset
when restoring from the command line.

[010] - Distributed Hardware Evolution 1.61
  by Miguel Garvie (http://freshmeat.net/users/MiguelGarvie/)
  Saturday, March 13th 2004 14:58

Scientific/Engineering :: Artificial Intelligence
System :: Hardware

About: This project allows the distribution of a genetic algorithm
evolving hardware designs across the Internet by setting up an island on
each clients' PC which will evolve during idle time. Individuals from
these islands will migrate between each other as they compete for
survival. All source code is available and is generalizable to any GA or
distributed processing task.

Changes: The underlying technology to distribute CPU intensive processing
tasks over a network has been set up as a Sourceforge project named
DistrIT (distrit.sourceforge.net). Advantages of DistrIT over BOINC
include x-platform, a simple and powerful architecture, clean and highly
secure code, and greater speed. The Startup Guide has been greatly
improved, and now shows how a distributed processing application can be
set up in 30 minutes.

administratively maintenance-free, self-learning anti-spam tool. DSPAM has
yielded real-world success rates beyond 99.9% accuracy with less than a
0.01% chance of false positives.

Changes: This stable release provides many new features, including
Bayesian Noise Reduction, Neural Networking, Automatic Whitelisting,
Global Filtering, Train-on-Error Support, and several new tool
enhancements. Other improvements include MySQL optimizations and client
compression, Postfix documentation, domain filesystem support, long
username support, enhanced CGI, Streamlined Blackhole List support, many

Caldera and contains up to four versions of each utility corresponding to
SVID3/SVR4, SVID4/ SVR4.2MP, POSIX.2/SUSV2, and 4BSD (SVR4 /usr/ucb). It

more than 100 individual utilities including bc, cpio, diff, ed, file,
find, grep, man, nawk, oawk, pax, ps, sed, sort, spell, and tar.
Extensive documentation is included.

Changes: In this version, cpio and pax now support the SunOS 4 'bar'
format. cpio, pax, and tar now automatically decompress gzip and bzip2
compressed archives even if input comes from a pipe or tape. Further

viewing it online. HTTrack can also update an existing mirrored site, and
resume interrupted downloads. WebHTTrack is a Web-based GUI for HTTrack.

Changes: This release can crawl .m3u and .aam files, fixed the broken
ftp:// and file:// engine, and fixed broken cookie handling, various
JavaScript bugs, configure script problems, keep-alive consistency
issues, and many other parsing problems. New categories were included

[027] - NNTPspider 0.1
  by Michael Mayer (http://freshmeat.net/users/mmayer/)
  Saturday, March 13th 2004 11:30

Communications :: Usenet News

About: NNTPspider searches for freely accessible NNTP servers (free news
servers) by using information from the message headers. This search starts
with at least one default newsserver that you can access, usually the one
at your ISP. It reads the Path: lines in the headers in order to find more
news servers. All the servers that are found are checked for public access
and queried for a list of supplied newsgroups. This results in a quite
complete list of all news servers currently availiable.

Changes: Major improvements in usability were made, and many bugs were
fixed. It is now considered alpha instead of pre-alpha.

Software Development :: Libraries

About: ORAPP is a programmatic API written in C++ around Oracle's OCI8 and
OCI9 APIs. It does not use exceptions or RTTI, and so is very small, fast,
predictable, easy to read, and easy to use. Like its predecessor ORA++,
ORAPP's design was influenced by MySQL++ and thus should be familiar to
those who have used MySQL's C++ interface.

Changes: Several changes were made to improve compilability on unsupported
platforms. A field-name termination bug was corrected. A crash around
accessing OOB field index values was fixed.

  Saturday, March 13th 2004 12:39

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: P::Classes is a portable, high performance C++ application
framework which provides many classes needed for real-world application
development, emphasing on ease of use, size and stability. Its current
highlights are a typesafe and threadsafe signal/slot mechanism, an I/O
system including a plugin-based architecture for network-protocol
transparent I/O, a plugin-based application message logging framework,
classes and driver-plugins to access SQL databases, a message digest
library, and classes for configuration management.

Changes: This release adds support for HP-UX style shared library loading,
native Solaris threads, a SQL logging plugin, a message digest/crypto
library, and many other features that were missing before. The transparent
net I/O library has been rewritten including plugins for file, http, and
ftp. To improve portability, configure checks have been redone and all
system dependant code has been moved into separate source files.

About: votmic is a Web voting system for small virtual societies. Each

repeatedly, only the last vote is considered.
