[001] - a-renet 1.0.1
  by Claudio (http://freshmeat.net/users/sick_soul/)
  Friday, March 12th 2004 14:22

Communications :: Chat
Games/Entertainment :: Turn Based Strategy

About: a-renet (Arena Revival Network) aims to build a distributed
multiplayer game creation system (clients, servers, and a metaserver) and
create a sample game on top of it (as a tribute to arena256, with which it
shares many game concepts). The existing code is a distributed chat with
an SDL client.

  by Roger Rene Kommer (http://freshmeat.net/users/rogerrenekommer/)

Software Development
Software Development :: Build Tools
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: ACDK is a development framework with a similar target of
Microsoft's .NET or Sun's ONE platform, but it uses C++ as a core
implementation language. It implements the standard library packages,
including acdk::lang, acdk::lang::reflect, acdk::util, acdk::io,
acdk::text (including regexpr), acdk::net, acdk::sql, acdk::xml, and more.
Flexible allocator/garbage collection, threading, and Unicode are
implemented in the core of ACDK. Extensions make C++ objects available for
reflection, serialization, aspect-oriented class attributes, and [D]ynamic
[M] ethod [I]nvocation. This DMI acts as an universal object oriented call
interface to connect C++ with scripting languages (Java, Perl, Tcl,
Python, Lisp, Visual Basic, and VBScript) and standard component
technologies (CORBA and COM).

Changes: This release introduces a new Java-like scripting language with
bindings to ACDK C++, COM, CORBA, and other scripting languages. A
template version of the collection framework was implemented, memory
management enhanced, and a test and logging framework was implemented. An
alpha version of wxWindows/wxWidgets binding is available for ACDK C++
and the new script language. The SQL package was made to work with SQL
2000 Server. Countless bugs were fixed, and many detail improvements were
made in all packages.

[004] - Astaro Security Linux 4.743 (Beta)
  by astaro (http://freshmeat.net/users/astaro/)
  Friday, March 12th 2004 11:06

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Firewall, VPN, spam, virus and surf blocking are all included in
Astaro Security Linux, an all-in one Internet security gateway. It does
stateful packet inspection filtering, VPN with IPSec (PKI for X.509
certificates) and PPTP, wireless LAN, VLAN, PPPoE, PPPoA, content
filtering, user authentication, virus protection, spam protection, and
much more. With its Web-based management tool, WebAdmin, and the ability
to pull updates via the Internet, it is pretty easy to manage. It is based
on a special hardened Linux 2.4 distribution where most daemons are
running in change-roots and are protected by kernel capabilities.

Changes: This new snapshot fixes the install issues (all Pentium and VIA
CPUs), High Availability Config and Up2Date sync, Interface type
PPPoA/PPTPC issues, and a Group definitions bug. It also includes fixes
for 'Store logfiles remotely' via SMB and SSH, IPSec CRL fetching via
LDAP, Surf protection (profile assignment via LDAP), and a lot of small
bugfixes and improvements.

About: autoindex is a PHP script that makes a table that lists the files
in a directory and lets users access the files and subdirectories. It
includes searching, icons for each file type, an anti-leech feature,
bandwidth limiting, access logging, and more.

Changes: The script is now configured through the Web browser rather than
by directly editing the PHP file. A filetype column has been added, and it
is optional to show each column.

System :: Software Distribution

About: BitTorrent is a tool for copying files from one machine to another.
FTP punishes sites for being popular. Since all uploading is done from one
place, a popular site needs big iron and big bandwidth. With BitTorrent,
clients automatically mirror files they download, making the publisher's
burden almost nothing.

Changes: The tracker works under Python 2.2 and supports 3.3 clients
properly. The client is unchanged.

Internet

About: ctrlproxy is an IRC server with multiserver support. It runs as a
daemon and connects to a number of IRC servers, then allows you to connect
from a workstation and work as the user that is logged in to the IRC
server. After you disconnect, it maintains the connection to the server.
It acts like any normal IRC server, so you can use any IRC client to
connect to it. It supports multiple client connections to one IRC server
(under the same nick), allowing you to connect to IRC using your IRC nick,
even while you have an IRC session open somewhere else. It supports
logging (in any user-specified format), password authentication, and CTCP
(in case no clients are connected). IRC servers can be contacted over
IPv6 and/or using SSL. Automatic identification with NickServ is
supported, as well as various types of backlog.

Changes: Several crashbugs have been fixed. The IRC RFC is now strictly
followed everywhere. mIRC can now successfully connect. Optional Python
scripting support has been implemented, as well as a Web-based
configuration script that uses it. Help has been updated. GNUTLS support
has been added. Work has been done to improve userfriendliness and
documentation.

  by Drew Hamilton (http://freshmeat.net/users/awh/)
  Friday, March 12th 2004 11:15

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat

About: Flooterbuck Infobot is a rewrite of Kevin Lenzo's (apparently
abandoned) "infobot" IRC bot project. It is meant to be cleaner, more
modular, and more hackable than the original. It can memorize static
pieces of information about things, as well as give
"dynamically-generated" replies (currency conversions, ebay auction
status, stock quotes, etc.).

Changes: The license has been normalized across all files. Support has
been added for paging, spell checking, translating between arbitrary
languages, URL shortening, combinatorics, and an excuse server. Support
has been added for many measurements to the conversion routines. There are
many bugfixes and code cleanups.

  Friday, March 12th 2004 03:46

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: FreeMarker is a template engine that was originally designed so
that servlet-based applications could keep graphical design separate from
application logic. The templates provide an easy and highly flexible way
to generate any kind of text output (HTML, RTF, PostScript, TeX, source
code, etc.) from a variety of data sources such as Java objects, Jython
objects, XML object models, and more.

Changes: The most notable improvements in this version are the ability to
define functions (methods) in templates, the ability to interpolate
variables in string literals, the support for a variable number of macro
parameters, and the more intelligent default object wrapper. It also
offers powerful new features for processing and transforming XML
documents making it a viable alternative to XSLT.

  Friday, March 12th 2004 14:05

Communications :: Chat
System :: Networking

About: Gadu-Gadu relaying agent is a simple Gadu-Gadu (an instant
messenger widely used in Poland) protocol relaying agent (proxy). This
means that if you are a network administrator and applying masquerade on
your server, it's likely that your customers would like to establish
direct connections over the masquerade using GG. This program is intended
to be the solution. It can be used to configure transparent proxying of GG
direct connections with the help of iptables.

Changes: This release contains several minor bugfixes (fd leak) and
improvements (memory management). SSL support has been adjusted to match
recent changes, but it is still compatible only with ekg. With these
improvements, it has finally become scalable enough to be used in large
networks.

Security
Security :: Cryptography
System :: Logging

About: grsecurity is a complete security system for Linux 2.4 that
implements a detection/prevention/containment strategy. It prevents most
forms of address space modification, confines programs via its Role-Based
Access Control system, hardens syscalls, provides full-featured auditing,
and implements many of the OpenBSD randomness features. It was written for
performance, ease-of-use, and security. The RBAC system has an intelligent
learning mode that can generate least privilege policies for the entire
system with no configuration. All of grsecurity supports a feature that
logs the IP of the attacker that causes an alert or audit.

Changes: This is the first public release of grsecurity 2.0-test for Linux
2.6.4. It contains all features of grsecurity 2.0 CVS as of today.

Communications :: Chat :: Internet Relay Chat
Security
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: IRC Defender is a Perl program for protecting your IRC network
against virus drones, general troublemakers, ban evasion, and attacks. It
is fully modular, able to unload and load modules on the fly, and comes
with several modules to ban anatoly/fyle virus drones, block unauthorised
cgi:irc sites, conduct ctcp version surveys, maintain ctcp version
blacklists, and (most importantly) set regexp-based akills.

Changes: This release adds a module that detects IRC join/part floods
network wide and is able to notify admins and lock channels temporarily, a
nickflood detection module capable of detecting nick flooding network
wide, and a module to ensure that only nicks matching a regexp list can
gain operator privileges. It has Debian-like dependencies within its
modules so that each module PROVIDEs a set of features and other modules
DEPEND on the features and can choose to bail if these features are not
satisfied.

[030] - Kernel Mode Linux 2.6.4_001 (For Linux 2.6)
  by Toshiyuki Maeda (http://freshmeat.net/users/tosh/)
  Friday, March 12th 2004 08:20

System :: Operating System Kernels
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables the execution of
user programs in a kernel mode. In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can
access kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel modules, user programs
are executed as ordinary processes (except for their privilege level), so
scheduling and paging are performed as usual. Although it seems dangerous,
the safety of the kernel can be ensured through such methods as static
type checking, software fault isolation, and so forth.

[034] - Linux Intrusion Detection System 2.2.0pre1 for 2.6.3 (2.6)
  by Huagang Xie (http://freshmeat.net/users/xhg/)
  Friday, March 12th 2004 17:16

Security
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: The Linux Intrusion Detection System (LIDS) is a patch which
enhances the kernel's security by implementing a reference monitor and
Mandatory Access Control (MAC). When it is in effect, chosen file
access, all system/network administration operations, any capability use,
raw device, memory, and I/O access can be made impossible even for root.
You can define which programs can access specific files. It uses and
extends the system capabilities bounding set to control the whole system
and adds some network and filesystem security features to the kernel to
enhance the security. You can finely tune the security protections
online, hide sensitive processes, receive security alerts through the
network, and more.

Changes: This version stores ACLs directly into the XATTR, uses in-kernel
SHA256 instead of RMD160, and removes some features like domain support,
bind port support, time support, and the sending email in kernel support.
This version is intended to be more compatible with the current kernel
architecture, but with little change to existing usage.

Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 16-1, which contains 6,661 foods
and 125 nutrients. This database contains values for vitamins, minerals,
fats, calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes the
essential polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels are
expressed as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of
food labeling in the United States, but also can be fully customized.
Recipes can be added, and graphs drawn. The program is completely
menu-driven and there are no commands to learn.

Changes: This release introduced the latest USDA database, SR16-1, and
changed the handling of the essential fatty acids. Lands' equation for
"estimated percentage of n-6 HUFA in plasma cell membrane phopholipids
based on diet" now only appears optionally on the analysis screen if the
user sets a required target value, in which case, William Lands'
recommendations for polyunsaturated fatty acid values replace the
program's own. The determination of what is Omega-6 and what is Omega-3
has been changed so as to estimate only when the USDA database does not
differentiate.

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Writing

About: PhonoRipper aims to be an easy-to-handle all-in-one GUI tool for
creating audio CDs from analog sources like vinyl records. The main parts
are just graphical frontends to well-known commandline programs, so some
dependencies must be fulfilled to run PhonoRipper. English and German
versions are available.

Changes: Basic drag'n'drop support has been added to phonoripper using a
slightly modified version of Python's Tkdnd module.

[054] - PHP/JavaScript interpreter 0.00111
  by milky (http://freshmeat.net/users/milky/)
  Friday, March 12th 2004 14:06

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: The PHP JavaScript interpreter is intended to be embedded into
CMS/Wiki engines to allow users to inject server-side executable code as
Web site extensions. This is possible because scripts run safely in a
sandbox, while interfaces to the hosting interpreters environment and
resources were still allowed. The language looks like a mix of PHP and
EcmaScript, but does not reach for completeness. It also runs magnitudes
slower than a real interpreter.

Changes: Unary operators are now supported, and initial documentation was
created. Because of the reworked internal variable representation, arrays
are now supported in scripts. Add-ons and simplified interfaces to the
library were added.

[055] - phpOpenTracker 1.4.1
  by Sebastian Bergmann (http://freshmeat.net/users/gravedancer/)
  Friday, March 12th 2004 11:12

Internet :: Log Analysis
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: Page Counters

About: phpOpenTracker is a framework solution for the analysis of Web site
traffic and visitor behaviour. It features a logging engine that, either
invoked as a Web bug by an HTML image tag or embedded with two lines of
code into your PHP application, logs each request to a Web site into a
database. One installation can track an arbitrary number of Web sites.
Through its API, you can easily access the gathered data and perform
complex operations on it (for instance, the analysis of your visitors'
click paths).

Changes: This release addresses a shortcoming in the new configuration
subsystem that was introduced in the previous release.

[063] - Sophster 0.9.3_2

  Friday, March 12th 2004 14:01

Communications :: File Sharing
Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: Sophster is an HTTP server that provides access to the Linux
server it's running on. It requires authentication and then takes on the
user and group ID of the credentials. File and folder access is then
limited by the user and group ID. It features file upload/download, file/
folder delete, move, copy, and rename, basic text editing, creation of
files and folders, and the ability to set permissions and user/group
ownership of files/folders.

Changes: This release adds code that better manages memory usage when
retrieving the request entity body, and a configuration option for
specifying a threshold at which the code will decide to cache the entity
body to file rather than use system memory. Code and a configuration file
option have been added to deny a request if the entity body exceeds the
defined value, closing the connection before receiving the entity body,
which saves bandwidth.

Documentation
Software Development :: Documentation
Text Processing :: General

About: Zoem is a macro/programming language. It can be used as an
all-round macro language, but has more specialized uses as well. One such
specific use is its support for creating small mark-up languages that map
 to different devices. It has character filtering capabilities tailored
to this application. Two such languages come packaged with zoem; one for
creating manual pages that can be output either in troff or in HTML, the
other for creating FAQs again in either troff or HTML output. It supports
arithmetic evaluation, regular expressions, multidimensional data
storage, iteration, comprehensive IO, control operators, dictionary
stacks, system commands, and more.

Changes: Zoem now reads input in chunks rather than in its entirety,
removing any limit on the size of files it can handle. The format#2 macro
(for txt mode) has new capabilities. You can now specify a padding string,
alignment (via substring match and alignment offset), and virtual length
(via a length macro and virtual argument) to accommodate arguments for
which the printing width differs from the length (this is useful for the
HTML pre environment, for example). The begin#1 syntax has been sanitized.
As an exceptional case, the faqsec environment from the FAQ package is no
longer backwards compatible.

Internet
Internet :: Name Service (DNS)

About: ZoneCheck is intended to help solve DNS misconfigurations or
inconsistencies that are usually revealed by an increase in the latency of
the application. The DNS is a critical resource for every network
application, so it is quite important to ensure that a zone or domain name
is correctly configured in the DNS.

Changes: In this version, more debugging information has been added, as
well as the ability to control more of the zone check initialisation
through environment variables (ZC_IP_STACK for IP stack detection, etc.).
The list of root servers has been updated to take B IP address changes
into account. Two options have been added to tailor HTML page generation.
The profile selection has been fixed (all profiles are now available).
The DNS resolver is now a little less aggressive in UDP and the CNAME
chain is followed when checking for reverse.
