System :: Monitoring
System :: Networking
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: BBStatus is an IP accounting package and an SNMP and IP monitoring
tool for Linux. It collects, summarizes, and displays the values from its
database. It can be used for IP accounting (allows you to design various
kinds of accounting filters), SNMP monitoring (collects data making SNMP
requests), ICMP monitoring (stores and summarizes values like min, avg,
max reply time, and packet loss), and client traffic filtering (using
various types of filters). It also provides user based access so that
every user can log in and visualize various data (depending on access
rights). It requires PostgreSQL, Apache with mod_auth_pgsql,
Perl(Net::SNMP), and RRDTool.

Changes: This version features important database structure changes which
will make the application faster. A database migration script is also
provided, as always. In the package two more crontab files were added
which will work with Dillon's Cron daemon. Minor modifications were added
to the INSTALL and HOWTO files.

System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: cabextract will extract the contents of Microsoft cabinet archives.
It also supports cabinets embedded in executables and multi-part cabinets.
It fully supports all cabinet compression methods, including MSZIP,
Quantum, and LZX decompression.

Changes: The CAB decompression routines have been refactored into a
reusable, portable library: libmspack. These routines are now
significantly more robust and have been tested on more than three
gigabytes of CAB files. The cabextract program now tells you it cannot
extract InstallShield CAB files. You can explicitly select which files to
extract and which cabinets to extract from. The package includes special
support for Windows CE install CABs.

  by John Anderson (http://freshmeat.net/users/Cobalt27/)
  Sunday, March 14th 2004 12:33

Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Libraries

About: The Common Graphics Math Library aims to provide the fundamental
mathematical structures used in 2D and 3D graphics. cgmath has templated
data structures; most are actually n-dimensional (rather than statically
2D or 3D), and arbitrary numeric types can be used. cgmath also attempts
to interface well with OpenGL. Matrices are stored in row-first order.
cgmath::Mat<4, 4, {float, double}> objects can be used in OpenGL function
calls.

Changes: Box has been moved to AABB (axis-aligned bounding box), and a few
outstanding bugs have been fixed. The Quaternion multiplication bug has
been fixed. Many functions have been inlined for better performance.

Text Editors :: Integrated Development Environments (IDE)
Text Processing :: Markup :: DocBook
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML

About: EditiX is a cross-platform and multi-purpose XML editor, which
helps Web authors and programmers use XML and XML-related technologies,
such as XSLT, FO and XSD schemas. It provides a lot of functionality
within a refined IDE, which guides the user with intelligent entry
helpers, and has real-time XPath location and syntax error detection. It
allows the user to apply an XSLT or FO transformation, and show the result
in a separate view. It includes default templates for XML, DTD, XHTML,
XSLT, XSD, XML RelaxNG, SVG, MathML and XML FO.

Changes: This release adds a new XSLT Editor. The user can generate a
temporary schema for document completion. An SVG preview is included. The
DTD can now be checked. The interface has been enhanced, improving the
global background processes for better reactivity, adding many more user
messages, and embedding documentation. Several bugs have been fixed.

[017] - EncFS 1.0.2
  by Valient  Gough (http://freshmeat.net/users/vgough/)
  Sunday, March 14th 2004 03:11

Security :: Cryptography
System :: Filesystems

About: EncFS is an encrypted pass-through filesystem which runs in
userspace on Linux (using the FUSE kernel module). Similarly to CFS and
other pass-through filesystems, all data is encrypted and stored in the
underlying filesystem. Unlike loopback filesystems, this does not have
any predetermined filesystem size.

Changes: This version mostly features build system improvements and
documentation additions. It uses pkg-config to look for extra OpenSSL
build flags, adds man pages for encfs and encfsctl, and updates the
command line processing to allow passing of special arguments through to
FUSE.

[025] - IFSgr 0.9.1
  by David Necas (Yeti) (http://freshmeat.net/users/yeti2/)
  Sunday, March 14th 2004 16:17

Multimedia :: Graphics

About: IFSgr is a command line two-dimensional linear IFS (Iterated
Function System) grayscale renderer. It uses Fractint's IFS file format,
and features automatic fractal scaling and gray level adjustment and
consistent image look independent of size or the numbers of iterations. It
can also convert Fractint files to Gimp IFS Compose files.

Changes: IFSes exported to Gimp IFS Compose format are rescaled to [0,1] x
[0,1] square so that one can better manipulate them; transformation
probabilities are converted to IFS Compose determinant-relative ones. All
progress messages go to standard error and don't mess up eventual output
to standard output. The --rotate argument is now really in degrees. There
is a manual page for the Fractint IFS file format.

[028] - JLAN Server 3.2
  by Starlasoft (http://freshmeat.net/users/starlasoft/)
  Sunday, March 14th 2004 05:27

About: The JLAN Server is a portable Java file server implementing the
SMB/CIFS, NFS, and FTP protocols. The server has a pluggable filesystem
architecture allowing shared filesystems to be mapped to the local
filesystem, database filesystems, storage servers, contact/document
management systems etc. A number of filesystems are included with the
server. The JavaFileDiskDriver maps to the local filesystem. The
JDBCDiskDriver uses a JDBC database to hold the filesystem details with
pluggable data loader classes used to load/save the file data. It
includes file loaders that map to the local filesystem and store data in
database BLOBs.

Changes: NTFS streams support and file locking support were added via
optional interfaces. Support for the Java Service Wrapper from
Tanukisoftware was added to allow the JLAN Server to run as an NT service,
daemon process, or console app. PassthruAuthenticator was added to allow
use of a domain controller or other server to validate users of the JLAN
Server. Many performance enhancements and bugfixes were also made.

[038] - Luau 0.1.6
  by David Eklund (http://freshmeat.net/users/auknight/)
  Sunday, March 14th 2004 16:10

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Installation/Setup
System :: Software Distribution

About: Luau provides a backbone for disseminating software updates
throughout a software project's userbase. It differs from other
autoupdate solutions (eg. apt, Red Hat Network) in that it works on a
decentralized basis - developers provide an "updates" file describing all
 currently available updates which is then downloaded and interpreted by
the client. It is also more flexible in that individual developers can
distribute not only software updates but messages throughout the
userbase, which can be used to inform users of important security
updates, new software roadmaps, or anything else the developer thinks is
important for users of the software package. Also provided is an X
front-end (called 'luau-x') and a console based front-end (called 'luau')
that allow the user to check for and download or install updates for all
supported software.

Changes: The XML format has been reworked in this release to accommodate
changes in the focus of the project -- specifically, to act more as a
"software repository" than just an updates database. The new XML example
file is available at the Web site, and a "luau-repository" DTD has been
made to describe the new format.

About: RLog provides a flexible message logging facility for C++ programs

messages of your choice in an number of ways: by hierarchical channel
name (e.g. "debug", "debug/ special", "error", etc.), or filename,
component name, etc. Log messages are individually enabled. It is meant
to be fast enough to leave in production code - even where it may be
called many times, as both the GCC and Intel compilers reduce the logging
overhead a few clock cycles if they are dormant (with no subscribers).
Other add-on components can extend subscriptions to external programs,

About: rxvt-unicode is a clone of the well known terminal emulator rxvt,
modified to store text in Unicode (either UCS-2 or UCS-4) and to use
locale-correct input and output. It also supports mixing multiple fonts at
the same time, including Xft fonts.

Changes: Code and configuration cleanup, fixes for compilation problems in
some configurations, and a fix for a segfault when the DISPLAY cannot be
opened.

Documentation

About: satzansatz ("sentence-to-sentence") is a Web-based Content
Management System for editorial work on electronic journals. It filters
the HTML output of word processors to plain HTML articles and offers
formatting of paragraphs, including pictures and tables, setting links and
footnotes, etc. It's easy to use for an editorial staff without HTML
experience, yet it's powerful enough to publish different e-journals in
issues, categories, and articles, including full-text search capability
and generated tables of content. The system splits into two modules for
readers and for editors, each with a privilege system and
content-sensitive help. Its output is designed with CSS (with
cross-browser compatibility) for adjustable page rendering.

Changes: A dynamic CSS design was added.

[057] - Smart Common Input Method platform 0.9.3 (Unstable)
  by suzhe (http://freshmeat.net/users/suzhe/)
  Sunday, March 14th 2004 21:22

Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: Smart Common Input Method platform is a development platform that
significantly reduces the difficulty of input method development. SCIM
splits input method into three parts: FrontEnd, which handles user
interface and communication with client applications, Server, which
handles the key event to string conversion work, and BackEnd, which
manages all of the Servers.

Changes: Input methods can be disabled in the configuration. The comment
prefix of a generic table has been changed to ###. A command line config
tool, scim-config-agent, has been added. This release has been fixed to
support GTK+ 2.3.5 or above (not tested). Some bugs in the GTK 2 immodule
and in the table server module have been fixed.

[059] - SpiralSynthModular 0.2.2
  by davedredz (http://freshmeat.net/users/davedredz/)
  Sunday, March 14th 2004 12:12

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Sound Synthesis

About: SpiralSynth Modular (or SSM) is an object orientated modular
softsynth / sequencer / sampler. Audio or control data can be freely
passed between the plugins, and is all treated the same. Data can also be
fed back on itself for chaotic effects. LADSPA plugins are supported, and
you can use them in the same way as any of the native plugins. Not having
MIDI won't restrict what you can do. It currently uses the standard
OSS/Free sound input/output (/dev/dsp), and should work on ALSA too. You
can also render WAV files directly to disk.

Changes: New GUI work and an improved LADSPA plugin. This release uses
libsndfile and outputs 16, 24, or 32 bit floats. It has ALSA MIDI support
and many fixes and features.

[060] - Split-Dist 1.0.0
  by Thomas Mailund (http://freshmeat.net/users/mailund_birc/)
  Sunday, March 14th 2004 12:36

Scientific/Engineering :: Bioinformatics

About: Split-Dist calculates the number of splits (edges) that differs for
two trees. When you construct phylogenetic trees using slightly different
methods, or from slightly different input data, the trees will not
agreecompletely on the topology. When they differ, it is interesting to
know where they differ, i.e. which edges can be found in both trees and
which cannot.

Changes: This release handles a set of trees instead of a pair; it reports
all pair-wise distances together with a list of all splits found in the
trees, or a list of all splits found in all trees. It can also annotate
each input tree with the fraction of the other trees that supports its
individual edges, similar to bootstrap values on edges.

About: svk is a decentralized version control system. While Subversion
(svn) aims to take over the CVS user base, svk attempts to take over the
user base of the other version control systems, including people who have
already switched to another version control system, as well as people who
have not yet started using a version control system. It is written in Perl
and uses Subversion's underlying filesystem.

[062] - sysstat 5.0.2
  by Sébastien Godard (http://freshmeat.net/users/godard/)
  Sunday, March 14th 2004 12:42

System :: Monitoring
System :: Systems Administration

About: The sysstat package contains the sar, mpstat, and iostat commands
for Linux. The sar command collects and reports system activity
information. This information can also be saved in a system activity file
for future inspection. The iostat command reports CPU statistics and I/O
statistics for tty devices and disks. The statistics reported by sar
concern I/O transfer rates, paging activity, process-related activites,
interrupts, network activity, memory and swap space utilization, CPU
utilization, kernel activities, and TTY statistics, among others. Both UP
and SMP machines are fully supported.

Changes: iostat will again look for statistics in /proc/partitions if
available. statistics are now read by iostat and mpstat as unsigned long
instead of int to avoid integer overflow. iostat should now handle
properly the case when the 'weighted number of milliseconds spent doing
I/Os' decreases with time. A minor temporary file vulnerability has been
fixed in the isag command.

  Sunday, March 14th 2004 03:40

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: HTTP Servers
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML/XHTML

About: This C code module gives the Apache 1.3.x HTTP server the ability
to correctly negotiate content types for XHTML documents. Currently these
are sent as text/HTML for most Web sites. This gives maximum
compatibility among older Web clients, but is not recommended practice
according to the  W3C.

Changes: The ETag header is now correctly handled when a negotiated
content-type is returned. These need to be unique for every distinct
content-type returned. There is initial support for the Apache 2.0.x
server.
