[002] - Bid Monkey 2.2 (Stable)
  by pedram (http://freshmeat.net/users/pedram/)
  Thursday, December 25th 2003 12:37

Internet
Utilities

About: Bid Monkey is a command line and GUI tool that automatically bids
on eBay auctions at the last possible moment ("sniping"). It will run in
the foreground or background, and only requires basic information from the
user, such as username, password, item number, and the maximum bid to
place. Among its more unique features, Bid Monkey abstracts the URL scheme
and regular expressions into a separate "patterns" database, allowing for
easy Web-based updates.

Changes: This release adds username/password reading from stdin, automatic
leading/trailing whitespace stripping to the GUI fields, and fixes for
some issues that caused Bid Monkey to fail.

About: blib is a library full of useful things to hack the Blinkenlights.
If you need to read the various formats for Blinkenlights movies, want to
implement the network protocol, or aim to develop a viewer/editor or
simulator for the Blinkenlights, this is what you need.

Changes: This release adds a new object called BProxyClient. It holds the
code to connect to a blinkenproxy and is supposed to be used from
blinkensim. Unlike previous implementations, this one works through NAT
routers.

blinkenstream functionality so that it also works if the blinkensim client
is being run behind a masquerading router or firewall.

System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: chpox provides transparent checkpointing and restarting of
processes on Linux clusters. It was originally designed for recovering of
tasks that takes long execution time (i.e. numerical simulations) in case
of system crashes, power failures, etc. It works with openMosix, is SMP

recompiling/relinking, and supports virtual memory, regular open files,
pipes, Unix domain sockets, current directory, termios, and child
processes.

Changes: Bugfixes related to locking orger and /proc entry handling were

About: CVTSA is a tool that allows a user to run arbitrary commands
remotely on a Linux system by sending email to the system. It maintains
security by requiring a password to be present in all email messages that
provide commands. There is a command wrapper file where the user can set
denied commands. It also uses a few other security techniques which are
outlined in the documentation.

Changes: This is the first stable release of CVTSA. A small bug that
caused a crash of CVTSA with badly formatted command-line options has been
fixed. Other small bugs were fixed, and options to change the UID and GID
at startup were added. A timeout while reading emails was added.

[032] - libRASCH 0.5.2

  Thursday, December 25th 2003 09:40

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: Devices for the measurement of signals use different data formats
to store the data on disk. libRASCH provides a common application
programming interface to access such signals, regardless of which storage
format is used. Additionally, it provides support for processing (e.g.
detects beats in an ECG) and viewing the signals. This functionality and
the access to the various file formats is realized with plugins.

Changes: The build system now works on Debian, and was tested on a Knoppix
3.3 installation. When selecting an area in a view plugin, the shown area
moves when the mouse is outside the window. In the ecg and blood-pressure
views, the information shown for each beat depends on the available space
(time resolution). The API was extended to support general event-flags
such as an event that was edited by a user.

[044] - Port Scan Attack Detector 1.3.1
  by Michael Rash (http://freshmeat.net/users/michaelrash/)
  Thursday, December 25th 2003 06:21

System :: Networking :: Firewalls
System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Port Scan Attack Detector (psad) is a collection of three
lightweight system daemons written in Perl and C that are designed to work
with Linux iptables firewalling code to detect port scans and other
suspect traffic. It features a set of highly configurable danger
thresholds (with sensible defaults provided), verbose alert messages that
include the source, destination, scanned port range, begin and end times,
TCP flags and corresponding nmap options, email alerting, DShield
reporting, and automatic blocking of offending IP addresses via dynamic
configuration of iptables firewall rulesets. In addition, psad
incorporates many of the TCP, UDP, and ICMP signatures included in Snort
to detect highly suspect scans for various backdoor programs (e.g.
EvilFTP, GirlFriend, SubSeven), DDoS tools (mstream, shaft), and advanced
port scans (syn, fin, Xmas) which are easily leveraged against a machine
via nmap. Psad also uses packet TTL, IP id, TOS, and TCP window sizes to
passively fingerprint the remote operating system from which scans
originate.

Changes: The ability to re-import scanning ip directories after a restart
of psad or a system reboot was added. An analysis mode was added so that a
logfile that contains iptables messages (such as the /var/log/messages)
can be analyzed for scans. ICMP type and code validation against RFC 792
was added. Excessive strictness with FW_MSG_SEARCH was fixed. The
signatures were updated to those included with snort 2.1.

formats can be generated from the source file. Anyone can write a

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Security

About: smtp-vilter is a high-performance content filter for sendmail,
which detects email viruses and spam. It can pass, discard, or simply mark
an email based on the results of a content scan. It relies on third-party
products for the actual content scan. It uses the milter API to
communicate with sendmail, and backends to communicate with the actual
scanning engines. The backends can be chained to perform a series of
checks on each message in one run.

Changes: A new command line option (-a) was added to define a prefix for
the Subject line of messages identified as spam. A new keyword
("spam-subject-prefix") was added in smtp-vilter.conf for the same
purpose. Error handling was improved in the vilter-clamd backend. Typos in
the warning messages were fixed.
