About: ascii takes a command line argument, recognizes in it any of the
synonyms for an ASCII character and prints all the others. Synonyms
include decimal, octal and hex numerical values, ASCII mnemonics, ISO code
points and official names, HTML/SGML style entities, and slang names
ranging from common to obscure. As a side effect, ascii serves as a handy
base converter for values in the range 0-255.

Changes: A portability bug in the Makefile sed script has been fixed.

[004] - bash programmable completion 20031225 (Stable)

  Wednesday, December 24th 2003 23:26

System :: Shells
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities

About: Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and
extend its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines
with just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to
complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3 str
[Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the UNIX
manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported file-systems
from the host called system, while make [Tab] would complete on all
targets in Makefile. This project was conceived to produce programmable
completion routines for the most common Linux/UNIX commands, reducing the
amount of typing sysadmins and programmers need to do on a daily basis.

Changes: In this release, mutt(1) and find(1) completion have both been
improved. ogg123 completion can now handle .flac and .spx files.

  Wednesday, December 24th 2003 05:35

Text Editors :: Integrated Development Environments (IDE)

About: cssed is a CSS stylesheet editor for Web developers. It lets you
write your own (XML based) CSS definition files and then insert CSS
properties and values in the stylesheet, just by clicking in a tree view.
You can also enable autocompletion in a document basis, so the CSS
properties and values are selected from pop menus in the editor to
increase speed. While static CSS values are inserted directly, complex CSS
values are dialog driven. The CSS definition file included in the release
fully supports CSS2.

Changes: This build fixes important bugs in the previous version, and
improves most of its features. Syntax highlighting has been improved to
recognize valid CSS units, colors, functions, fixed values, and
hexadecimal color values. The selector scanner is now working, and can
warn about some common CSS syntax errors. This is a recommended upgrade if
you are running previous versions of cssed.

Security
System :: Monitoring
System :: Operating System Kernels

About: This project provides a kernel module which provides 3rd-party
applications with an interface for file access control. It was originally
developed for on-access virus scanning. Other uses include a file-access
monitor/logger or external security implementations. It operates by
intercepting file-access calls and passing the file information to a
3rd-party application. The 3rd-party application then has the opportunity
to tell the kernel module to allow or deny the file-access. The 3rd-party
application also receives information about the file, such as type of
access, process ID, user ID, etc.

Changes: Some "in use" problems with spontaneous context-switches when
unloading under FreeBSD were fixed. Macros for hooking/unhooking system
calls were added. Filename length restrictions were removed. Code for
generating protocol13 was abstracted and moved into XP layer. Support for
filenames with non-printable characters was added. The ability to compile
the interface library without 1.x compatibility was added. An "off by one"
bug which occurred when calculating include/exclude path lengths was
fixed. Support for Linux 2.6 kernels was added (not yet complete, but very
functional).

Text Processing

About: FastCST Non-Linear Suffix Tree Delta is a unique delta encoding
algorithm which is based on suffix trees. It is actually rather efficient,
and has other beneficial properties. It's primary advantages are that it
processes in O(n+m) time no matter what the differences are; the deltas
are fairly small; it works on binary files; it can produce edit distance
calculations; it allows for a possible merge analysis; and it is
incredibly simple. There is a working example written in C which
demonstrates the algorithm.

  Wednesday, December 24th 2003 14:08

About: Katana IRC Bot -- Spam Module is a module for the Katana IRC Bot.
When the bot is given proper OPER privileges, it will respond with a
user-specified command when it receives a private message with a URL in
it. This is useful for IRC Opers to use to KILL, K:LINE, or SHUN spam bots
that go through userlists and send out spam messages. It responds to many
kinds of URLs, and the command executed is configured in the config file.
The bot changes nicks before and after it executes the kill to deflect
spammer ignore lists.

About: Kludge3d is a simple 3D model editor in the spirit of Worldcraft or
Milkshape. It is the offspring of several other GTK-based editors, with
the best features taken from each. As the name implies, kludge3d is a
kludge.

Changes: A convenient way to run scripts without having to use the text
entry box (saves typing), tool "roll-ups", an l-systems Python script,
texture loading for wavefront files, and drag-and-drop loading of models
have been added. Texture names are now relative to the model's path, not
absolute. Many bugs have been fixed, including some show-stoppers. Some of
the dialogs have been rewritten. Work has begun on loading/editing/saving
"materials" (emission, specular, etc). New documentation was added for the

[036] - Luau 0.1.3
  by David Eklund (http://freshmeat.net/users/auknight/)
  Wednesday, December 24th 2003 10:51

Software Development :: Libraries
System :: Installation/Setup
System :: Software Distribution

About: Luau provides a backbone for disseminating software updates
throughout a software project's userbase. It differs from other
autoupdate solutions (eg. apt, Red Hat Network) in that it works on a
decentralized basis - developers provide an "updates" file describing all
 currently available updates which is then downloaded and interpreted by
the client. It is also more flexible in that individual developers can
distribute not only software updates but messages throughout the
userbase, which can be used to inform users of important security
updates, new software roadmaps, or anything else the developer thinks is
important for users of the software package. Also provided is an X
front-end (called 'luau-x') and a console based front-end (called 'luau')
that allow the user to check for and download or install updates for all
supported software.

Changes: This release features support for multiple weighted mirrors for
distributing packages, and new support for the autopackage packaging
framework (www.autopackage.org). Many new fields have been added to the
stored program information database in order to provide a more informative
interface to the user, and the documentation has been vastly updated to
cover all new and previously undocumented functions. The API has changed
significantly, so any programs using the libuau interface will have to be
updated.

Scientific/Engineering

About: Moodss is a modular monitoring application, which supports
operating systems (Linux, UNIX, Windows, etc.), databases (MySQL, Oracle,
PostgreSQL, DB2, ODBC, etc.), networking (SNMP, Apache, etc.), and any
device or process for which a module can be developed (in Tcl, Python,
Perl, Java, and C). An intuitive GUI with full drag'n'drop support allows
the construction of dashboards with graphs, pie charts, etc., while the
thresholds functionality includes warning by emails and user defined
scripts. Any part of the visible data can be archived in an SQL database
by both the GUI and the companion daemon, so that complete history over
time can be made available from Web pages, common spreadsheet software,
etc.

Changes: The ability to save dashboards in database history mode was
added. The partitions module should now display precise read and write
statistics in kilobytes. The use of the watch mouse cursor was removed on
display updates, as it could induce memory growth in the XFree86 server on
Linux platforms. The usual bugfixes and minor improvements were also made.

it does not really make sense to play alone. It also has some nice
features you would expect from such a game, such as theme support and very
accurate key settings (one can change the repeat rate of each key
independently).

Changes: This release comes with many new features, such as mouse
controlled menus, dynamic map size, in-game chat, metaserver support, and
a bunch of bugfixes. It should be more user friendly than before.

[058] - UICompiler 1.2
  by Thomas Zander (http://freshmeat.net/users/zander2/)
  Wednesday, December 24th 2003 05:48

Multimedia :: Graphics
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
Software Development :: User Interfaces

About: The UICompiler is designed to be used as both a rapid prototyping
tool for GUIs as well as a superior approach to GUI building, combining
modules for Qt and Java Swing.

Changes: UICompiler has broadened its scope since the last release. After
the rapid creation of new user interfaces is complete, further efforts
will go into making it easier to add additional technologies and making
the UI more responsive, both of which basic Swing has been doing poorly.
With this release, using UICompiler classes will be just as important (if
not even more important) as its capabilities of using a GUI designer.

[061] - xine xine-ui 0.9.23
  by Daniel Caujolle-Bert (http://freshmeat.net/users/f1rmb/)
  Wednesday, December 24th 2003 08:34

Multimedia :: Video :: Display

About: xine is a free multimedia player. It plays back CDs, DVDs, and
VCDs. It also decodes multimedia files like AVI, MOV, WMV, and MP3 from
local disk drives, and displays multimedia streamed over the Internet. It
interprets many of the most common multimedia formats available--and some
of the most uncommon formats, too. All those features come in a reusable
library (xine-lib) which can easily be embedded in your applications.

Changes: This release comes with lots of improvements, such as full
localization, a new help window, new deinterlacing, support for new shiny
unscaled OSD, and more. A large number of bugs were also fixed.
