Desktop Environment :: Fonts
Desktop Environment :: Gnome 2
Software Development :: Internationalization

About: Ankur is working toward supporting the Bangla (Bengali) language on
the GNU/Linux operating system. Most of the subprojects are focused on
XFree86.org's XServer, and some are platform independent.

Changes: This release has updated documentation, updated versions of Gaim,
Xine-lib, Epiphany and Gedit, minor code cleanup, and translation updates.

[002] - ArX 1.0.17
  by wlandry (http://freshmeat.net/users/wlandry/)
  Friday, December 26th 2003 18:06

Software Development :: Version Control

About: ArX is a distributed revision control system that features
distributed repositories, fancy merging, support for renaming, unobtrusive
operation, a Web interface, and revision libraries. It supports a number
of different network protocols, and has minimal installation requirements.

Changes: This is an unstable release. The new documentation is more or
less complete, so the non-free documentation has been removed. There is
now a _rough_ Python interface to ArX, a patch queue manager (courtesy of
Colin Walters), and a number of smaller improvements.

[003] - Autopoweroff 2.0.0
  by Hans Deragon (http://freshmeat.net/users/deragon/)
  Friday, December 26th 2003 18:04

System :: Boot :: Init

About: Autopoweroff is a script that shuts down a computer at a specific
time, but only if some conditions are met. It works well on home
router/firewalls where the machine can be switched off every night and
powered back up in the morning. It can be configured to only shut down the
server after any computers which depend on the server for Internet access
have been shut down.

Changes: A user interface to simplify configuration has been added.
Miscellaneous Autopoweroff events are now reported in syslog for tracking
purposes. The GNOME dependency has been removed for servers running in
text mode only.

Information Management :: Workflow Frameworks

About: Babeldoc is a framework and set of applications to process
documents for business-to-business and other Internet/integration
applications. It is primarily intended for text documents, especially XML,
but supports a wide range of operations and data types. It has a
sophisticated journaling system that supports replaying and reprocessing.
Babeldoc is pipeline based and supports numerous ways to combine the
pipeline stages in a dynamically reconfigurable fashion. It has a GUI and
a Web-based console for document processing and monitoring, and comes with
tools for the tranformation of flatfile data to XML, archival, and
cryptography. Additionally it is able to scan various data sources based
on sophisticated constraints.

Changes: A directory scanning defect that stopped directories from being
added to the Babeldoc classpath has been fixed. An error in segmented line
processing in the conversion module has been fixed.

About: Bluewall GNU/Linux is a distribution that is installed using only
commandline tools from a shell. It includes a small set of preconfigured
binary packages from Debian GNU/Linux. It can be used easily and safely as
a rescue CD because of its easy-to-use RAMDISK image. It doesn't have any
well-defined installation procedure, so you can install it the way you
want, using the standard tools of Unix/Linux machines, and you can use it
on any system.

Text Processing :: Filters

About: Bogofilter is a Bayesian spam filter. In its normal mode of
operation, it takes an email message or other text on standard input, does
a statistical check against lists of "good" and "bad" words, and returns a
status code indicating whether or not the message is spam. Bogofilter is
designed with fast algorithms (including Berkeley DB system), coded
directly in C, and tuned for speed, so it can be used for production by
sites that process a lot of mail.

System :: Operating System Kernels
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Kernel Mode Linux is a technology which enables the execution of
user programs in a kernel mode. In Kernel Mode Linux, user programs can
access kernel address space directly. Unlike kernel modules, user programs
are executed as ordinary processes (except for their privilege level), so
scheduling and paging are performed as usual. Although it seems dangerous,
the safety of the kernel can be ensured through such methods as static
type checking, software fault isolation, and so forth.

[036] - Linux-VServer 1.3.1 (Development)
  by Herbert Pötzl (http://freshmeat.net/users/bertl/)
  Friday, December 26th 2003 11:48

Security
System :: Operating System Kernels :: Linux

About: Linux-VServer allows you to create virtual private servers and
security contexts which operate like a normal Linux server, but allow many
independent servers to be run simultaneously in one box at full speed. All
services, such as ssh, mail, Web, and databases, can be started on such a
VPS, without modification, just like on any real server. Each virtual
server has its own user account database and root password and doesn't
interfere with other virtual servers.

Changes: The ip_info struct was adapted to match vx_info, and allocation
and deallocation work similarly. Strict locking for vx_info and a better
solution for dynamic context allocation. Heavy code cleanup, improved
compatibility layer, and the re-introduction of vx_id.

[044] - nut 9.6
  by Jim Jozwiak (http://freshmeat.net/users/jozwiak/)
  Friday, December 26th 2003 08:15

Scientific/Engineering :: Medical Science Apps.

About: nut is nutrition software to record what you eat and analyze your
meals for nutrient composition. The database included is the USDA Nutrient
Database for Standard Reference, Release 16, which contains 6,661 foods
and 125 nutrients. This database contains values for vitamins, minerals,
fats, calories, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, etc., and includes the
essential polyunsaturated fats, Omega-3 and Omega-6. Nutrient levels are
expressed as a percentage of the Daily Value, the familiar standard of
food labeling in the United States, but also can be fully customized.
Recipes can be added, and graphs drawn. The program is completely
menu-driven and there are no commands to learn.

Changes: The program is now capable of understanding food names in simple
English, such as "fried chicken" and "mashed potatoes." This is
accomplished by including the list of abbreviations the USDA uses and by
successively searching for each tokenized term, whatever the order in the
USDA name.

About: The Reverse Trace Garbage Collector for C++ is a memory manager for
C++ that automatically reclaims dynamically allocated objects that are no

root references are broken (as opposed to scanning the whole stack and
heap for unreferenenced blocks). It also reclaims memory incrementally

About: RoadMap is a navigation program for Unix that displays street maps.
The maps are provided by the US Census Bureau, and thus only cover the US.
A specific area can be displayed by selecting a street address (street
number, street name, city, and state). It interfaces with gpsd to track a
GPS position, and has been designed to be usable on a desktop or laptop
computer, or on a PDA.

Changes: The Familiar package is now built with "-march=armv4
-mtune=xscale". The sunrise/sunset calculation has been integrated. This
information is only used for display (trip information). A regression
occurring when merging street ranges in buildmap has been fixed. A problem
with identifying merged ranges through the Find/Address.. command has been
more or less corrected. The stacking order for street signs, trip
information, and waypoints has been cleaned. First steps have been taken

About: SimpleCDR-X is a GTK+ based frontend for CD writing, mastering, and
audio manipulation. Its design goals include ease of use and a clean
interface without compromising functionality. SimpleCDR-X utilizes many
common utilities such as cdrecord, cdrdao, mkisofs, cdparanoia, cdda2wav,
mpg123, ogg tools, and lame. SimpleCDR-X supports on-the-fly CD track
ripping to MP3 or OGG and importing of MP3 or OGG files to CD in Audio CD
Mastering. SimpleCDR-X also features CD Copying, burning from a saved ISO,
and Data CD Mastering.

Changes: Basic ogg tagging support has been added to the tag editor and
integrated to the ripping interface. The ability to insert track numbers
before filenames has been added. A rare crash bug dealing with arrays out
of bounds in data CD creation has been fixed.

[061] - Simulacra Image Gallery 1.01
  by Thomas Matthews (http://freshmeat.net/users/torke/)
  Friday, December 26th 2003 23:12

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Presentation
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Viewers

About: Simulacra is a PHP-based image gallery that provides simple, yet
elegant looking HTML 4.01 documents. In addition to images, it displays
MP3, MPG, and AVI files, and media formats can be customized to your
liking. It features basic and advanced style sheet editing capabilities
within a built-in administration system. Automatic thumbnail creation and
caching is included. Captions are stored in files. A database server is
not required.

Changes: This version fixes a video display bug in the thumbnails script,
and changes the code to move cached thumbnails and slides into their own
directory. It can now display an image at the top of the script. It
changes the way thumbnails and slides are created, so that smaller images
will remain untouched. This release also adds a "create-cache" script,
which creates thumbnails outside of a Web environment, and fixes the
session output error.

[063] - Speech Dispatcher 0.2
  by Hynek Hanke (http://freshmeat.net/users/hhanke/)
  Friday, December 26th 2003 08:44

About: Speech Dispatcher is a device independent layer for speech
synthesis, developed with the goal of making the usage of speech synthesis
easier for application programmers. It takes care of most of the tasks
necessary to solve in speech-enabled applications. What a very high level
GUI library is to graphics, Speech Dispatcher is to speech synthesis. The
architecture is based on a proven client/server model. The basic means of
client communication is through a TCP connection using the Speech
Synthesis Independent Protocol (SSIP), or through an interface library.

Changes: Caching of characters, keys, and sound icons in the Festival
output modules now brings much quicker responses for these types of
events. The documentation has been improved. Definition of the SSIP
protocol and its aims is now in a separated document. Necessary recoding
in the Festival output module is now received from Festival itself. This
fixes a problem with other languages with different charsets.
