[003] - Aegis Virus Scanner 0.0.2
  by Gavin Brown (http://freshmeat.net/users/Jodrell/)
  Monday, July 21st 2003 07:36

Utilities

About: Aegis Virus Scanner is a virus scanner for Linux/Unix systems with
a simple and intuitive user interface. It uses the File:: Scan module for
detecting viruses.

Changes: This release is compatible with the recent 0.90 release of
Gtk2-Perl. Configuration options are now preserved between invocations,
and Aegis can now log its actions to a file. The user now has the option
of renaming an infected file instead of deleting it. An "about" dialog
that details the version and date of the virus definitions was
implemented.

themeable but still works in any browser (even in those without CSS
support) including text browsers. It features good quoting support.

Changes: The layout has been changed to also work in Opera and Internet
Explorer. Database connections have been optimized for additional speed.
Links to the next thread and the previous thread have been added. It's now
much easier to add the forum to your site "inline". A Spanish language
file has also been added.

[006] - AnimalTracker 0.65
  by Rainer Blessing (http://freshmeat.net/users/RainerB/)
  Monday, July 21st 2003 15:31

Scientific/Engineering
Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: AnimalTracker can be used to track the position of animals (or
other objects) in the context of an observation. Users can draw a map of
the area and position the animals on it. The application can then
calculate the distance between the animals and the distribution of them on
the map across a specified time period. All data can be exported as tables
to be used in spreadsheet applications or statistics programs.

Changes: A lot of bugs which showed up in the wxGTK version were removed.
The median algorithm is now also used to calculate the mean distance. The
distribution view has a colour dialog where colours can be selected to
indicate the amount of animals within a square.

About: APcrond is a very lightweight Perl script originally developed to
run on CDROM-based Linux systems that may not have access to writable
directories. It is also nice to use as a personal application scheduler,
as multiple simultaneous copies can be run. It follows most of the
standard Unix cron conventions.

[008] - Arch Linux 0.5 (Development)
  by Judd Vinet (http://freshmeat.net/users/apeiro/)
  Monday, July 21st 2003 15:20

System
System :: Operating System
System :: Systems Administration

About: Arch Linux is an i686-optimized Linux distribution. It is
lightweight and contains the latest stable versions of software. Packages
are in .tar.gz format and are tracked by a package manager that is
designed to allow easy package upgrades. Arch is quite streamlined
compared to some other distributions. Things that are relatively unused
are not kept (info pages, for example). A default Arch install leaves you
with a solid base; from there, you can add packages to create the custom
installation you're looking for. Arch has a package build system that
allows you to easily create your own packages, which makes it very easy to
rebuild a package with your own custom configuration. Arch also aims to
use the newer features available to Linux users, such as reiserfs/ext3 and
devfs.

Changes: MD5 password support, PAM support, and a new drop-in /etc/conf.d
daemon config area have been added. There are two stock kernels now (ide
and scsi), and there is LVM support in the initscripts. The installer has
also been improved: it has the option to build a kernel from source,
better package selection, grub support (now default), and a better package
install screen. A ton of package updates were also made.

About: arCHMage is an extensible reader and decompiler for files in the

known as Compiled HTML. arCHMage is based on chmlib by M. Russotto.

Changes: mod_chm (an Apache module for viewing CHM files on the fly) is
now included in the package. It uses large amounts of memory now, due to
some issues with chmtools. Also major bugfixes related to links
lowercasing were made in this release.

[011] - bash programmable completion 20030721 (Stable)
  by Ian Macdonald (http://freshmeat.net/users/ianmacd/)
  Monday, July 21st 2003 02:33

System :: Shells
System :: Systems Administration
Utilities

About: Since v2.04, bash has allowed you to intelligently program and
extend its standard completion behavior to achieve complex command lines
with just a few keystrokes. Imagine typing ssh [Tab] and being able to
complete on hosts from your ~/.ssh/known_hosts files. Or typing man 3 str
[Tab] and getting a list of all string handling functions in the UNIX
manual. mount system: [Tab] would complete on all exported file-systems
from the host called system, while make [Tab] would complete on all
targets in Makefile. This project was conceived to produce programmable
completion routines for the most common Linux/UNIX commands, reducing the
amount of typing sysadmins and programmers need to do on a daily basis.

Changes: .shtml completion for browsers was added, along with extra
extension completions for xine and xanim. vim et al no longer complete on
.gz and .bz2 files. Fixes and improvements were made to mplayer completion
and a fix was added for dselect completion.

[013] - BINS photo album 1.1.22

  Monday, July 21st 2003 02:31

Internet :: WWW/HTTP
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Multimedia :: Graphics :: Graphics Conversion

About: BINS is a valid HTML 4 photo album generator with support for
internationalization, EXIF, and customizable charset encoding, including
UTF-8 (Unicode). Albums can contains other sub-albums. The appearance of
the album can be fully personalized by using template and configuration
parameters. The number and size of scaled pictures can be chosen in pixels
or percentage of the original image. Several description fields (date,
location, etc.) can be associated with the pictures, and you can add
additional description fields. A command line utility or a GTK+ GUI can be
used to set or edit description fields. BINS can use the EXIF data
structure found in some pictures to automatically fill some fields (most
notably, date and time) and to produce a page providing all information
available on the picture, as well as the DigiCam settings when the photo
was taken. All image meta-data are stored in XML files.

Changes: In this version, the Perl 5.8 UTF-8 file writing problem has
been corrected. The htmldefaults option of HTML::Clean has been removed,
because it breaks UTF-8 strings in Perl 5.8. New satyap style templates
have been added as well as a Dutch translation.

  by Gernot Hillier (http://freshmeat.net/users/yoda_gh/)
  Monday, July 21st 2003 13:21

Communications :: Fax
Communications :: Telephony

About: CapiSuite is an ISDN telecommunication suite providing easy-to-use
telecommunication functions which can be controlled from Python scripts.
It uses a CAPI-compatible driver for accessing the ISDN-hardware, so
you'll need a CAPI-compatible driver. CapiSuite is distributed with two
example scripts for call incoming handling and fax sending. They provide a
multi-user answering machine with fax recognition, remote inquiry, and fax
receiving/sending functions.

Changes: This will be one of the last releases of the 0.4.x series. It
fixes some important bugs reported by several people in the last weeks.
One of the oddest bugs which hit many Red Hat users and some SuSE users is
now fixed. Some minor features have been added, like color fax reception
and the ability to add comments to fax jobs.

About: distcc is a parallel build system that distributes compilation of
C/C++/ObjC code across machines on a network. It can be set up in just a
few minutes and makes builds up to ten times faster. It does not require
machines to share a filesystem or have the same libraries or header files,
and installation does not need superuser privileges.

Changes: In this version, the addition of optional LZO compression and
use of memory mapped files has increased distcc's performance. Some new
unusual compiler command lines are now supported properly. The

Internet
System
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks

About: Keepalived for LVS aims to add a strong and robust keepalive
facility to the Linux Virtual Server project. This project is written in C
with multilayer TCP/IP stack checks. It implements a framework based on
three family checks: Layer3, Layer4, and Layer5. This framework gives the
daemon the ability of checking a LVS server pool states.When one of the
servers in the LVS server pool is down, keepalived informs the Linux
kernel via a setsockopt call to remove this server entry from the LVS
topology. In addition, it implements a VRRPv2 stack to handle director
failover.

Changes: This release is focused on VRRP high performance and
optimizations. Shared buffer is used for adverts handling, and shared fd
is used for outbound adverts. The instance lookup design uses o(1)
scheduling design to reduce VRRP scheduling jitter using a customized hash
index. track_interface was extended to support multiple interface
tracking. Optimized lookups provide o(1) scheduling speed. The scheduling
framework was extended to support child signalization, and gratuitous ARP
code was extended. Support for scheduling auto-recalibration was added,
and the VRRP scheduling timer was extended to support fd hash table index.

  Monday, July 21st 2003 23:20

System :: Networking
System :: Systems Administration

About: Linux Bandwidth Arbitrator allows beginning-to-advanced network
administrators to control bandwidth. It is designed to be completely
turn-key in its default configuration. You just plug it into your network
trunk, and it self configures and immediately starts slowing "bandwidth
hogs". It also comes with finer controls that are easy to use, and can be
configured to target specific applications such as Kazaa, IMAP, and POP.
Traffic can be limited by host IP, subnet, and content blocking.

Changes: This release adds a cron routine so shaping rules can vary on a
schedule, adds a new reporting utility that will support tracking
specific application or port usage per host or subnet, and bundles the
5.2 GPL arbitrator code with the feature for smoothing out bandwidth

  Monday, July 21st 2003 02:37

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: Moosic is a music player that focuses on easy playlist management.
It consists of a server process that maintains a queue of music files to
play and a client program which sends commands to the server. The server
continually runs through its playlist, popping items off the top of the
list and playing each with an external program. The client is a simple
command-line utility which allows you to perform powerful operations upon
the server's queue, including the addition of whole directory trees,
automatic shuffling, and item removal according to regular expressions.
The server comes configured to play MP3, Ogg, MIDI, MOD, and WAV files.

Changes: The "previous" moosicd method and moosic command were added. A
bug in which the "putback" moosicd method didn't update the value returned
by the "last_queue_update" moosicd method was fixed. A small modification

About: QDBM is an embeded database library compatible with GDBM and NDBM.
It features hash database and B+ tree database and is developed referring
to GDBM for the purpose of the following three points: higher processing
speed, smaller size of a database file, and simpler API.

Changes: The B+ tree database features a transaction mechanism. It is
possible to commit a series of operations between the beginning and the
end of the transaction in a lump, or to abort the transaction and
perform rollback to the state before the transaction. Even if the process
of an application is crushed while the transaction, the database file is

  Monday, July 21st 2003 08:21

Software Development :: Libraries

About: The aim of SCEW is to provide an easy interface to the XML Expat
library. Expat gives an API based on event handling mechanisms to load
the XML tree structure. SCEW provides functions to load and access XML
elements without the need to create the event handling routines and
without the need to rewrite these functions each time a different XML
tree needs to be loaded. It also lets developers access the internal
Expat parser, which means they can still have all the functionality that

[100] - synergy2 1.0.12
  by Chris Schoeneman (http://freshmeat.net/users/crs/)
  Monday, July 21st 2003 20:35

Desktop Environment

About: Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between
multiple computers with different operating systems without special
hardware. It's intended for users with multiple computers on their desk
since each system uses its own monitor(s). Just move the mouse off the
edge of a screen to move to another screen; keyboard and mouse input is
then redirected to the other screen. Synergy also lets you cut and paste
between systems and it makes screen savers activate/deactivate in concert.

Changes: This release completes support for European keyboard layouts and
characters, including dead key composition, and improves AltGr handling.
Also, pressing ctrl+alt+pause will simulate ctrl+alt+del on a client.
Several bugs were fixed: unconnected clients don't fill up the logs,
unconnected clients don't warp the mouse, NumLock now works properly with

About: These pppd plugins implement authentication, authorization and
accounting (AAA) via a TACACS+ and RADIUS servers. The TACACS+ plugin is
based on Cisco tac_plus sources, and the RADIUS plugin is based on FreeBSD
libradius sources which are both included in the distribution. Both
plugins have common design, similar features, and similar configuration
options. If desired, these plugins may be loaded into plugins stack by
means of Stacker meta-plugin for pppd and tried one by one until
authentication/authorization succeeds.

Changes: A "ToDo List" chapter has been added to the documentation page.
Both MPPE and non-MPPE patches for pppd-2.4.1 have been changed to add
more plugin hooks and to change the plugin interface to be more similar to
the not-yet-released pppd-2.4.2 plugin interface. MS-CHAP, MS-CHAPv2, and
MPPE support have been added to the RADIUS plugin; this has been tested
with the FreeRADIUS server only. A compatibility patch is available for
pppd with the MPPE+MSCHAPv2 patches previously applied. The mkdep utility
from PMake is no longer used; cc -M is used instead. Libproc is now

About: VICE is a Versatile Commodore Emulator, i.e. a program that runs on
a Unix, MS-DOS/Win95/NT or RiscOS machine and executes programs intended
for the old 8-bit Commodore computers. The current version emulates the
C64, the C128 (80 column screen is included now), the VIC20, all the PET
models (except the SuperPET 9000, which is out of line anyway) and the
CBM-II (aka C610).

Changes: This version adds an -autoload switch which acts like - autostart
but without actually starting the program. It is possible to use the
printer emulation without switching off true drive emulation now. Each
file system drive has a separate error channel. A command was added to

System :: Networking
System :: Operating System

About: WANPIPE S-series is a family of intelligent multi-protocol WAN and
ADSL adapters that support data transfer rates up to 8Mbps. All WAN
protocols supported by WANPIPE are implemented in firmware and run on the
card. An advantage of an intelligent adapter is that it offloads the
system CPU and improves stability. By adding a Sangoma WAN/ADSL component
to the Linux kernel, one can create a powerful multi-T1/ADSL
router/firewall with proven reliability of Linux. Sangoma S-series cards
support an optional on board T1/E1 CSU/DSU that eliminates all external
components of a traditional routing solution: i.e. T1/E1 line can be
directly connected to the card. WANPIPE supports the following protocols,
ATM, ADSL, Frame Relay, PPP, MULTILINK PPP, CHDLC, X25(API), BitStreaming
(API), BiSync(API), and SDLC(API). Furthermore, WANPIPE supports custom
API development such as: Credit card verification, Voice-over IP,
Satellite Comm. All device drivers are part of the standard Linux Kernel
distribution.

Changes: New API sockets were implemented. The MPAPI sockets have replaced
the original WANPIPE API sockets. The API interface is fully backward
compatible. Thus, the change is completely transparent to the API users.
This change was necessary due to design flaws in original API sockets.
