[002] - a place to go 0.4.0
  by Tillmann Heidsieck (http://freshmeat.net/users/jashugan/)
  Tuesday, July 22nd 2003 13:38

Communications :: Email :: Post-Office :: IMAP

About: aptg(2) (a place to go) is a Web-based email client written in PHP,
using localhost connections to a running IMAP4 server. It is designed to
work with Postfix. Authentication is against a MySQL database as used by
pam_mysql (username + password) or by using one of the virtual email
addresses (also stored in the MySQL database) and that password. A
powerful addressbook is also included. It uses its own session handling
system with one-time session ids.

Changes: This release is a complete code rewrite of the older versions.
The code structure and design have been completely changed. For security
purposes, new session-handling has been created, using
one-time-sessionids, which will make session hijacking very difficult.

[020] - Fast OnlineUpdate for SuSE 0.10.0pre5 (Beta)

  Tuesday, July 22nd 2003 19:38

Security
System :: Systems Administration

About: Fast OnlineUpdate for SuSE (fou4s) is a bash script that provides
the functionality of YOU (YaST OnlineUpdate), but can also work in
background and check for updates every night. It supports resumed
downloads and proxies by using wget. GPG signatures are also checked.

Changes: This update fixes problems with the 1st level cache (scripts
didn't work after first run). The message about processes accessing
deleted files is now no longer printed if fou4s is the only process that
has been updated. Packages with "++" in it should also work now (they
caused a conflict with an internal structure). Finally, the packages
directory is no longer changed if CacheDir is overwritten by an option.
You also have to overwrite RpmDir if you want to move everything away from
/var/cache/fou4s.

  by Andy Grove (http://freshmeat.net/users/andygrove/)
  Tuesday, July 22nd 2003 02:49

Database
Software Development :: Code Generators

About: FireStorm is a powerful development tool that reduces the amount of
coding required for a typical business application by automatically
generating the persistence tier. It reverse-engineers existing data
sources and generates a Java persistence framework that is independent of
any specific persistence technology, and then offers the choice of
generating implementation logic based on JDBC or EJB. The generated source
code conforms to the widely accepted Data Access Objects (DAO) design
pattern and has no dependencies on any proprietary runtime libraries.

Changes: This version now provides an option to generate Entity Beans
instead of JDBC code. It generates the Entity Bean home, remote, and
implementation classes, as well as EJB/CMP deployment descriptors. There
is full CMP 2.0 support including EJB-QL generation.

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: FreeMarker is a template engine that was originally designed so
that servlet-based applications could keep graphical design separate from
application logic. The templates provide an easy and highly flexible way
to generate any kind of text output (HTML, RTF, PostScript, TeX, source
code, etc.) from a variety of data sources such as Java objects, Jython
objects, XML object models, and more.

Changes: This release cycle introduces significant new features for
processing and transforming XML documents. The new "visit" and "recurse"
directives have been introduced to enable XSLT-style recursive processing.
The template language now allows users to define functions with return
values. Variable interpolations in string literals are now supported. This
release fixes a bug introduced in the last release, where XPath queries
did not work against the root document node. There have also been some
improvements in the documentation.

Other/Nonlisted Topic

About: Gpsdrive is a map-based navigation system. It displays your
position on a zoomable map provided from a NMEA-capable GPS receiver. The
maps are autoselected for the best resolution, depending of your position,
and the displayed image can be zoomed. Maps can be downloaded from the
Internet with one mouse click. The program provides information about
speed, direction, bearing, arrival time, actual position, and target
position. Speech output is also available.

Changes: This release uses the GTK+ 2.2 toolkit with nicer fonts, and a
better looking layout and use of Unicode. The friends mode is now
UDP-based, so GpsDrive can exchange position data with mobile Internet
connections.

  Tuesday, July 22nd 2003 10:08

Office/Business :: Financial
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: HBCI4Java is a Java library for the HBCI home banking interface.
It supports almost all aspect of the HBCI versions 2.01, 2.1, 2.2, and
HBCIplus (with PIN/TAN support). Its API is very application-oriented, so
no knowledge about HBCI is required.

Changes: This release changes some of the API to work with business tasks.
These changes lead to more readable and more intuitive applications. There
are also some API changes in other parts of HBCI4Java, but fortunately
there is now (almost) complete documentation of all of the things you can
do with it. There are almost no new features; this release deals with a
lot of bugs and integration issues. You really should update to this
version and no longer use the old API.

Security
System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: JMap is a Java network portscanner, a security tool to identify
open ports on any host or network subnet. It features the ability to scan
every host in a given network segment, for a range of ports or a specified
network service. Supported protocols are TCP and UDP. Scanning is done
using multiple Java Threads, which should produce significantly faster
results when scanning individual hosts, network subnets or scanning for a
specific service on a subnet.

Changes: The reliability of the threaded scanning has been drastically
improved. The results of TCP scans, including subnet scans, are now far
more accurate. Limits have been placed upon the number of simultaneous
threads allowed, to reduce system load.

[044] - MIB Smithy SDK 2.3b1 (Development)
  by Muonics (http://freshmeat.net/users/muonics/)
  Tuesday, July 22nd 2003 03:28

Software Development :: Code Generators
Software Development :: Compilers
Software Development :: Libraries :: Tcl Extensions

About: MIB Smithy SDK is a dynamic extension to Tcl/Tk (8.1+) that allows
development of custom scripts for controlling SNMP agents, manipulating
SMI definitions, doing conversions, and more. It is based on the core of
Muonics' MIB Smithy, and the SDK supports SMIv1 and SMIv2, as well as
SNMPv1/v2c/v3 with HMAC-SHA-96 and HMAC-MD5-96 authentication and CBC-DES
privacy. It also provides complete read-write access to all elements of
SMI/MIB Module definitions, unlike similar extensions that provide only
read access to a limited subset. The SDK allows multiple discrete SMI
databases and SNMP sessions, and provides all of the built-in validation
and error recovery capabilites of the full product, without the visual MIB
development environment.

Changes: HTML docs are now included (and remain available online). A
"find" command was added for finding matching records by name or OID.
Example scripts were added in the form of 10 functional command-line
tools: rfc2mib, smicheck, snmpbulk, snmpget, snmpinform, snmpnext,
snmpset, snmptrap, snmptrapd, and snmpwalk. More optimizations were made
to cut MIB load time by still another 40 - 50%. Some compiler messages
were clarified. Bugfixes were made to the "oidcmp" command, rare OID
index update issues on record deletion, minor trap processing bugs, and
one potential crash in the "new" command.

System :: Archiving
System :: Archiving :: Backup
System :: Archiving :: Compression

About: Star is a very fast, POSIX-compliant tar archiver. It reads and
writes POSIX compliant tar archives as well as non-POSIX GNU tar archives.
Star is the first free POSIX.1-2001 compliant tar implementation. It saves
many files together into a single tape or disk archive, and can restore
individual files from the archive. It includes a FIFO for speed, a pattern
matcher, multi-volume support, the ability to archive sparse files and
ACLs, the ability to archive extended file flags, automatic archive format
detection, automatic byte order recognition, automatic archive
compression/decompression, remote archives, and special features that
allow star to be used for full and incremental backups. It includes the
only known platform independent "rmt" server program that hides Linux
incompatibilities. The "rmt" server from the star package implements all
Sun/GNU/Schily/BSD enhancements and allows any "rmt" client from any OS to
contact any OS as server.

Changes: This version adds some new functionality that helps to better
deal with security issues arising from tar archives that contain '..' in
file names or link names. Note that a tar implementation cannot give full
security against badly hand crafted archives that are designed to
compromise  your system.

  Tuesday, July 22nd 2003 14:32

Software Development :: Libraries
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: Turbo Vision is a C++ library that provides a very nice user
interface for console applications. This UNIX port is based on Borland's
version 2.0 with fixes. It was made to create RHIDE, a nice IDE for gcc
and other GNU compilers. The library supports /dev/vcsa devices for fast
access to local consoles, and it uses ncurses to run from telnet and
xterm. This port, in contrast to the Sigala's port, doesn't have "100%
compatibility with the original library" as goal. Instead, many
modifications were made for the sake of security (especially buffer
overflows). This port is also available for the original platform (DOS).

Changes: This release adds a class to abstract the use of i18n and support
for UTF-8 Linux consoles.
