  by z-man (http://freshmeat.net/users/zmanuel/)
  Sunday, July 20th 2003 09:14

Games/Entertainment
Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: In Armagetron, you ride a lightcycle around the game grid. You can
only make sharp turns of 90 degrees and a wall constantly builds up after
you. Make your enemies crash into your wall, but be aware that they are
trying to do the same to you. If you are fast enough, you may be able to
trap them, but the only way to speed up your lightcycle is to drive close
to the dangerous walls. Prepare for exciting strategic preparations
followed by action-packed close combat!

Changes: This release introduces two new features. The first feature
causes an instant win zone to be activated when nothing happens for a
while (usually because all remaining players are trapped in large areas).
The first player to reach the zone wins. The second feature causes brakes
to wear off and prevents them from being used to delay death when the user
is trapped. Some minor bugs were also fixed.

[006] - BBStatus 2.0 RC17
  by Tarhon-Onu Victor (http://freshmeat.net/users/mituc/)
  Sunday, July 20th 2003 14:05

About: BBStatus is an IP accounting package and an SNMP and IP monitoring
tool for Linux. It collects, summarizes, and displays the values from its
database. It can be used for IP accounting (allows you to design various
kinds of accounting filters), SNMP monitoring (collects data making SNMP
requests), ICMP monitoring (stores and summarizes values like min, avg,
max reply time, and packet loss), and client traffic filtering (using
various types of filters). It also provides user based access so that
every user can log in and visualize various data (depending on access
rights). It requires PostgreSQL, Apache with mod_auth_pgsql,
Perl(Net::SNMP), and RRDTool.

Changes: This release has code cleanup and various bugfixes. In the IP
monitoring module, site administrators can now choose whether the email
notifications will be sent at every check or only when client/equipment
status changes.

[012] - ClairVoyanT SysAdmin 0.1.8
  by binduck (http://freshmeat.net/users/binduck/)
  Sunday, July 20th 2003 06:13

About: CVTSA is a tool that allows a user to run arbitrary commands
remotely on a Linux system by sending email to the system. It maintains
security by requiring a password to be present in all email messages that
provide commands. There is a command wrapper file where the user can set
denied commands. It also uses a few other security techniques which are
outlined in the documentation. CVTSA can use a local fetcher to download
email, or it can create a connection to a remote mail server to download
email by itself. There is also an option that allows a pseudo-random
password to be created.

Changes: The man page was updated. A small bug was fixed. The program is
now faster and more usable. The main() function was divided into more
functions. Handling of errors, subdivision of the sys_ex() function, and
handling of arguments were all improved. The check_promisc() function was
removed, since it was only usable by root and running CVTSA with such
privileges is unwise.

(bit rate, sample frequency, play time, etc.).

Changes: Temporary files created during ID3 saving are now properly
cleaned up. A "bug" when date frames are present but contain empty strings
has been fixed. A --no-color option has been added to the eyeD3 driver.

  Sunday, July 20th 2003 03:16

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: FoodClub (the package) contains modules that were written
specifically for facilitating the administration of an organic
food-buying club over the Web. They were designed to run under Apache.
If you are also running mod_perl, this software takes full advantage, and
you will notice substantial performance benefits. The main intended
audience for this software is end-users (non-programmers). It is not
meant to be a component for use in other software.

Changes: This version adds a few minor features, and fixes a few bugs. It
now can handle archiving orders up to once per day, instead of just once
per month. Previous orders are now shown using a dynamic column
algorithm instead of all in one column. A bug that caused a truncated
splits file when trying to change_qty on a nonexistant split item was
fixed (caused by use of browser back button/cached pages).

[020] - Goanseech 0.2
  by Bruno Böttcher (http://freshmeat.net/users/bboett/)
  Sunday, July 20th 2003 13:56

Utilities

About: Goanseech is a spinoff of the leverlada IRC leech script. One of
its core parts was extracted and refunded into a standalone server. This
server holds information about the basic pattern specifying the base name
of a TV series, which epsiodes were already fetched, and what is the
maximum number of episodes. Connecting through SSL to this server, there
is a curses client and a GTK shell, a script that parses Web pages for
Bittorrent links, matches them against the information on the series
server, and issues a batch file with ready Bittorrent retrieval command
lines to retrieve files that are wanted by the user (it also controls the
Bittorrent client), and a directory watcher which scans a given set of
directories and updates the series server with newly found files.

Changes: The Bittorrent extractor is now able to control itself the Python
bittorrent client. The Bittorrent extractor was rewritten using OO
techniques to be able to easily integrate it into a full-time running
framework. A basic framework was laid down, allowing for regular Web site
parsing and control of the Bittorrent processes.

maintain that document. Given a program which produces reasonably standard
--help and --version outputs, help2man will attempt to re-arrange that
output into something which resembles a manual page.

Changes: Support for generating localized manual pages has been added. The
currently supported locales are French and Polish.

About: Internet Chess ToolKit is a Java-based set of libraries and widgets
useful for performing common tasks such as reading SAN
(internationalized), FEN, PGN, and generating legal moves.

Changes: This is a bugfix release. A few changes in the PGNReader allow it
to be a little more flexible in handling different interpretations of the
PGN spec. There were a few bugs spotted in the chess model when rare board
positions were reached (like pawn checking the King taken enpassant on the

Games/Entertainment :: Multi-User Dungeons (MUD)

About: JamochaMUD offers Unicode, plug-in, and multi-language support (8
different languages) to allow a more enjoyable MUCKing/MUDding experience.
It features command history, synchronized window controls, experimental
SOCKS 5 support, and greatly improved ANSI colour support. It plays nice
on Unix systems, supports a wide range of MU*s, and also includes
emulation of some TinyFugue editor controls. It uses Java 1.1, and
includes classes to be easily reused in other Java applications.

Changes: Bugfixes have been included to prevent a connection "hang" when
no plug-ins are present. The JMConfig code has undergone a lot of
restructuring to reduce confusion and create a more efficient way of
setting and getting configuration options. Much of the code has also been
improved by following suggestions based on the output of PMD.

[028] - Java XML View 0.4
  by Gal Binyamini (http://freshmeat.net/users/galbin/)
  Sunday, July 20th 2003 21:44

Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: JXV (Java XML View) is a library which allows for Java objects to
be given "XML Views", and for those views to be read back into objects. It
supports both SAX and DOM output, and can read XML input from any
SAX-compliant parser. Resulting DOM trees are dynamic, and reflect changes
made to the object model even after they were created. It fully supports
namespaces in its XML views, and can correctly parse and read XML content
with namespaces. It also uses a pluggable architecture which allows XML
view factories to be configured and loaded at runtime.

Changes: This release was focused on improving the ease-of-use of JXV. The
configuration format was simplified and the default configuration
generation scheme was vastly improved so it can take care of most of the
difficult tasks involved in configuring XML views. The end-user
documentation has been completely revamped, replacing the old user's guide
with a new step-by-step tutorial which is far easier to read and
understand. In addition, some performance and memory efficiency
improvements were included.

Software Development :: Libraries
Text Processing :: Markup :: XML

About: Mini-XML is a small XML parsing library that you can use to read
XML and XML-like data files in your application without requiring large
non-standard libraries. It only requires an ANSI C compatible compiler
(GCC works, as do most vendors' ANSI C compilers) and a "make" program. It
supports reading and writing of UTF-8 encoded XML files, and provides a
hierarchical view of the file via a linked-list tree structure of typed
nodes and functions for managing, traversing, and searching the tree.

Changes: This version adds string load/save functions and emulation of the
strdup() function on platforms that don't provide it. The load functions
now also use dynamically allocated buffers to support longer names and
values.

bookmarks as input. A Swing UI allows users to enter search words and
view the results.

Changes: This version can now also work as a Mozilla SideBar. The cursor
changes when the rendering takes longer to render the search results. The
code has been slightly refactored to promote reuse.

[056] - Squash 0.5
  by Gryn Garkin (http://freshmeat.net/users/gryn/)

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players

About: Squash is a C/Ncurses-based music player. It supports MP3 and Ogg
Vorbis through libraries (with planned FLAC support). It uses statistics
to determine songs to play automatically. It garners this information
through whether or not a song is skipped. It also avoids picking the same
song twice. Thus, it is like a radio station that plays the songs you like
without you having to call in requests.

Database
Database :: Front-Ends
Games/Entertainment

About: VideoDB is a database to manage your personal video collection.
It's mainly designed for videofiles but you can also put your DVDs and VHS
tapes in it. It features fetching movie data/covers from the Internet
Movie Database (IMDb), local caching of coverimages, an option to mark
movies as seen, a search by genre or title/subtitle/plot/cast data, a
filter for TV episodes, a random movie function and a simple borrow
manager. It is a personal database, so no user management/authentication
scheme is implemented. Everybody may add/edit/delete movies.

Changes: This version features a bugfix for the genre links in the
movie's detailed view. The TV-Episode switch is now stored in the
session, and checkbox labels now are clickable.

About: WebShop provides a framework for an Internet shop using EJB 2. It
includes the beans necessary to operate an e-commerce enterprise, as
well as a sample servlet/JSP implementation of a shop.

Changes: The project has been restructured to use Maven for project
control, build, and Web site generation. Bean interface classes are now
generated by XDoclet. Bean descriptors are now generated by XDoclet for
JBoss and WebLogic. Beans have been adapted to fit a Session Facade model.
Beans and the sample implementation are now split into separate projects.

[063] - WindowLab 1.12
  by Nick Gravgaard (http://freshmeat.net/users/nickgravgaard/)
  Sunday, July 20th 2003 13:58

Desktop Environment :: Window Managers

About: WindowLab is a small and simple window manager of novel design. It
is click-to-focus, shares its window depth policy with the Amiga, and has
a window resizing/reshaping method similar to that of 8-1/2 from Plan 9.
It maintains the illusion of direct manipulation by constraining the mouse
pointer when appropriate (i.e., when a window cannot be dragged any
further in one direction). The pointer is also constrained vertically
(effectively making the target menu items infinitely tall according to
Fitts's law) when it is in the menubar to reduce pointing time.

Changes: The cycle_previous() and cycle_next() functions were greatly
simplified, an unhide() function was added, and the code was changed so
that iconic windows are now listed in the taskbar, and clicking their
buttons will unhide them. The RATIONALE file was also added to explain the
reasoning behind some features. Code was added to keep windows (e.g.
Mozilla and Mozilla Firebird) from raising themselves, refix_position()
was modified to handle maximized (decorless) windows properly, and a few
bugs were fixed and code cleanups made.

[064] - Xaraya 0.9.0.6
  by niceguyeddie (http://freshmeat.net/users/niceguyeddie2001/)
  Sunday, July 20th 2003 18:03

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Site Management
Software Development :: Libraries :: Application Frameworks

About: Xaraya is extensible, Open Source software written in PHP. It
utilizes robust permissions, data management, and multilingual systems to
dynamically integrate and manage content. Its modular,
database-independent architecture introduces tools which separate form,
function, content, and design.

Changes: This release is in response to a reported security issue. Not
much has changed between .9.0.5 and .9.0.6, but all users are suggested to
upgrade. The reported security issue allows a malicious user to gain
access to areas that their privilege set should not allow. This release
fixes this issue, and hardens areas such as the memberslist against XSS
attacks.
