System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: Airfart is a wireless tool created to detect wireless devices,
calculate their signal strengths, and present them to the user in an
easy-to-understand fashion. It supports all wireless network cards
supported by the linux-wlan-ng Prism2 driver that provide hardware signal
strength information in the "raw signal" format (ssi_type 3).

Changes: The GTK GUI has been updated to allow users to select visible
columns and to set the activation time limit. The backend has also gone
through a lot of cleanup and runs more efficiently now.

About: ALT Linux is a set of Linux distributions which are based on
Sisyphus, an APT-enabled RPM package repository which aims to achieve
feature completeness, usability, and security in a sensible and manageable
mixture.

Changes: This release contains a lot of new packages in addition to
largely improved existing base; almost all of them are built with gcc3.
The already good server and desktop is now a lot better with a larger
degree of audited and secured services and smoother office and multimedia
applications out-of-the-box.

[006] - Arno's IPTABLES Firewall Script 1.7.3RC2
  by Arno (http://freshmeat.net/users/arnova/)
  Friday, March 7th 2003 09:18

System :: Networking :: Firewalls

About: Arno's IPTABLES firewall script was originally derived from Seven's
(single-homed) IPTABLES script. The biggest differences are that this
script has support for dual-homed machines, support for masquerading
(NAT), support for ethernet ADSL/DSL modems (for both static and
dynamically assigned IPs), support for all IP protocols, and support for
VPNs like IPSEC (Freeswan). It also features (stealth) portscan detection,
extensive user definable logging with rate limiting to prevent log
flooding, port forwarding, optimizing the throughput of your internet
connection, protection against SYN/ICMP flooding (DoS attacks), support
for UPnP, and much more. It's easy to configure and highly customizable.
It additionally includes a filter script (fwfilter) to make your firewall
log more readable.

Changes: This release changed/adds numerous variables (and accompanying
features) in the configuration file; old configuration files are
incompatible and should be updated accordingly. It fixes DHCP-broadcast
logging, T-DSL modem support, connection-tracking for Slackware, and
rp_filter, and fixes/updates the fwfilter script. Support for use in
internal CLASS A/B/C networks has been improved.

[009] - BHL 1.5
  by Bastien Guerry (http://freshmeat.net/users/bastien1/)
  Friday, March 7th 2003 09:33

Text Editors :: Emacs
Text Editors :: Word Processors
Text Processing :: General

About: BHL is an Emacs mode which enables you to convert plain TXT files
into HTML, LaTeX, and SGML (Linuxdoc) files. The BHL mode handles common
font-styles, three levels of sections, any kind of lists, tables, URLs and
horizontal rules. BHL handles a table of contents: you can browse the toc,
insert the toc where you want, and update the sections' numbers with one
keystroke.

Changes: You can now run the BHL conversion functions from your shell. BHL
recognizes four styles of sectioning. You can automatically switch from
one style to another and guess the style of the current buffer. You can
list the links (URLs or WikiNames) of your document and follow them. You
can add specifications strings so that the core conversion functions
adequately handle the currently-edited file.

  Friday, March 7th 2003 20:39

Desktop Environment :: Gnome
Desktop Environment :: Gnome 2
Office/Business

About: Debt Minder is a specialized tool for debt management. It is user
friendly, complete, functional, and economical, and considers account
subtleties such as introductory APRs, varying interest rates, split
interest rates, external payments, and more. Its visualization
capabilities include pie charts, line graphs, bar charts, area graphs,
debt to income ratios, and colored payoff tables. An integrated
amortization calculator for American and Canadian methods is included,
and payoff schedules can be exported to XML, CSV, and tab delimited files

Changes: Convenient contextual menus were added to payoff tables by
right-clicking payoff schedules. A preference option was added that, when
enabled, will number the months in the payoff schedule. A convenient
"regenerate" button was added. Alignment issues in some controls were
addressed in a couple of the account option panels.

Software Development
Software Development :: Documentation
Software Development :: Quality Assurance

About: DoctorJ is a set of applications that analyze Java code.
Documentation is verified for compliance with the standard and for
accuracy against the code, beyond what javadoc does. Statistics for a file

class and method, and the overall total. A syntax analyzer is in
development.

Changes: Erroneous documentation can now be fixed semi-automatically
(i.e., with user confirmation). For example, misspelled words can be
replaced with those from the local dictionary file(s). This feature can be
used for both generating skeletal (templated) documentation and for
correcting errors. Several bugs have been fixed.

hardware-accelerated video card that supports at least OpenGL 1.2.

Changes: Lots of bugfixes were made, and a new help command was added to
the game. The client sleeps a lot, while in the console mode, so now if
you switch to the console mode and do things such as browsing the net,
play other games, etc. your other applications will be much more
responsive. The ignore command was added, which is very useful against AOL
kids. You can turn around in place now, but you have to stand still (as

[025] - Graphical certification authority 0.3.0
  by Christian (http://freshmeat.net/users/chris2511/)
  Friday, March 7th 2003 05:37

Security :: Cryptography

About: Graphical certification authority is an interface for managing RSA
keys and certificates, and the creation and signing of PKCS#10 requests.
It uses the OpenSSL library and a Berkeley DB for key and certificate
storage. It supports importing and exporting keys and PEM DER PKCS8
certificates, signing and revoking of PEM DER PKCS12, and the selection
of x509v3 extensions. A tree view of certificates is presented.

Changes: This release removes several bugs and memory leaks. An export to
TinyCA has been added. The certificate view can now be switched between
tree and plain view. The notAfter dates in the certificate view can now be
sorted reasonably. The certificate details dialog has been redesigned to
be a smaller tab dialog. Item viewing and importation via the commandline
is now possible, and the wizard invokes the key generation process only if
it is really needed.

Software Development
Software Development :: Libraries :: Java Libraries

About: JAC is a Java framework that provides some facilities to achieve
Aspect-Oriented Programming and to separate concerns when programming
(distributed) applications (for instance, the persistence or
authentication aspects can be considered independently from what the
application is doing). It provides a runtime execution environment that
supports Aspect-Oriented applications written with the JAC framework that
provides visualisation, administration, and configuration tools for the
applications and for their aspects.

Changes: The IDE (UMLAF) has been greatly improved. Java and aspect
configuration code editors now have contextual completion, some rtti and
integrity configurations are now generated for the business model,
applications can now be launched from the IDE, and aspects configurations
can be dynamically reloaded from the IDE while the application is running.
The GUI aspect has been slightly improved with the addition of "expression

  Friday, March 7th 2003 20:26

Database
Information Management :: Records Management

About: JCards is a free Java application designed to store and manage data
in any format that the user defines. Instead of having multiple
applications/spreadsheets to manage passwords, tasks, shopping lists,
etc., JCards allows the user to define a database that contains the fields
they want. This is accomplished via an easy to use interface that requires
no understanding of SQL or any other database jargon. JCards was initially
developed for the Sharp Zaurus SL-5x00 PDA, but will run on any desktop or
PDA that has a 1.1 or above version of the Java Virtual Machine on it. The
advantage of this is that the user can use the same application on the PDA
and desktop to manage their data.

Changes: New options were added to word-wrap memo fields and hide field
labels when viewing cards. The length of memo fields is set individually.
You can now find within previous search set. Extra icons have been added
when running on a desktop. Import/export of CSV understands multi-line
fields, and CSV import/export can use an alternative character set.

Scientific/Engineering :: Visualization

About: jRSVP is a Java 1.4 tool for Rapid Serial Visual Presentation, a
technique for extremely fast reading. It uses the Multivalent library for
parsing input documents, and is able to read PDF, PS, HTML, man pages, and
other documents. It displays texts on a word-by-word or
sentence-by-sentence basis and features a file history and bookmarks.

Changes: Enhancements were made to many different functions, and a
preferences dialog was added. It is now possible to change back- and
foreground color, display delay, and maximum delay. The calls to the
PreferencesAPI were replaced with a different solution which leaves the
Windows registry alone. The open file dialog now remembers the last
directory you opened a file in. Space and enter were added as commands to
start and stop the display. Changes were made to the in-memory storage to
speed up switching the display mode.

About: Junkie is a stable GTK2 FTP client for the X Windows system. It has
features such as queueing files, downloading/uploading of whole
directories, caching of directories, drag and drop, a site manager,
preferences (and a configure library), and an event-based FTP library,
which means that the client should be stable and not slow the user
interface down much.

Changes: The client has been made much more stable, the code has been
cleaned a lot, and the package has been made much smaller. A new multiple
site feature was added so you can be connected to many sites at once,
optional password encryption is included for more security, and more.

[032] - Katie snapshot-18
  by Geoffrey D. Bennett (http://freshmeat.net/users/gbennett/)
  Friday, March 7th 2003 10:20

Software Development :: Version Control

About: Katie is a revision control system, somewhat like a cross between
CVS and NFS, that was inspired by Rational ClearCase. The three most
interesting features are that the repository is mounted as a filesystem
(rather than being copied to a local workspace), that all versions of all
files (even deleted ones) are accessible through this filesystem (so the
"katie diff" command is a convenience rather than a necessity like "cvs
diff"), and that directories are versioned (just like files are). It is
functional enough to be self-hosting, but there is much work still to go
before it will be a generally useful tool. Features that are implemented
already include VOBs, elements, branches, dynamic views, view-extended
pathnames, config specs (including auto-make-branch rules), labels, hard
links, and symbolic links.

Changes: Support has been added for VOB symlinks, VOB hard links, and
'katie ln'. This allows for files to be 'undeleted' if they have been
removed with 'katie rmname', and it also permits directory contents to be
merged manually. A number of miscellaneous bugs were also fixed.

cron) or run interactively via the command line. A configuration file is
used to store commonly used options.

Changes: Red Hat changed the URL location of their public key;

stripped from the downloaded Red Hat public key so "rpm --import" doesn't
choke. Syslog output was cleaned up.

  by Travis Whitton (http://freshmeat.net/users/whitton/)
  Friday, March 7th 2003 14:10

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries

[067] - salias 0.3.0 (C)
  by Frank J. Tobin (http://freshmeat.net/users/ftobin/)
  Friday, March 7th 2003 16:47

Utilities

About: salias is a wrapper for programs that allows arguments to those
programs to be aliased. For example, salias could expand "gpg -r friends
--encrypt" to "gpg -r bob -r frank --encrypt". This is more useful than
using simple environment variables, as other programs calling the
wrapped-program don't have to worry about searching environment variables.
Also, salias deals well with things needing repeating prefix options, such
as with GnuPG's "-r" option (as shown in the example stated).

this, salias is much, much faster. A new configuration file format is now
being used.

magnitude). In addition, SISC is a complete implementation of the
language. The entire R5RS Scheme standard is supported. This includes a
full number tower including complex number support and arbitrary precision
integers and floating point numbers, proper tail recursion, hygienic
macros, and full support for first-class continuations (not just the
escaping continuations found in many other systems).

non-standard packages for every machine.

Changes: This release works correctly with Slackware 9.0rc1 and above. The
upgrade script is now a template. MD5 sums and digital signatures of the
packages are now checked before upgrading. Important packages (glibc,

  by Ben Crowell (http://freshmeat.net/users/bcrowell/)
  Friday, March 7th 2003 14:05

Education :: Computer Aided Instruction (CAI)

About: Spotter is software that can check students' answers to symbolic
and numerical problems in math and science. It recognizes an answer
regardless of the form it's in, and the instructor can put in helpful
hints as responses to frequently-occurring mistakes. Symbolic answers can
be input in a notation closely resembling normal human math notation
(e.g., xy rather than x*y, and sin x instead of sin(x)). Spotter runs as a
Perl CGI application on a Web server; the student doesn't need to install
any software.

Changes: Students can send email through Spotter to each other and to
their instructor. The messages will always be formatted in a way that
makes it clear who they're from, which avoids hassles with students
sending unsigned messages. The parser has been improved to make it give
more informative error messages in certain cases.
