Fine-tuning MPlayer
by Arpad Gereoffy (http://freshmeat.net/~arpi/)
Section: Tutorials
Saturday, March 8th 2003 00:00

MPlayer is a movie player. It's written mainly for Linux, but it works on
most Unices and even on other architectures like OSX, QNX, and (somehow)
even Windows. Although it's a desktop/end-user application, it is not as
user-friendly as it should be. Some time ago, I even told newbies (coming
from Windows) to try xine instead of using the commandline MPlayer.

[001] - Aranha 0.0.309
  by Daniel Silverstone (http://freshmeat.net/users/kimballkinnison/)
  Saturday, March 8th 2003 19:33

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content
Text Processing :: Markup :: HTML

About: Aranha is a piece of software written to allow Web applications to
be written more cleanly and more easily. It is a Local FastCGI Responder,
although work is in progress to allow it to work as a FastCGI Authoriser
and a FastCGI Filter. It is based on the programming language Lua, and
contains many extensions to enable easy Web site development and
maintenance.

Changes: Aranha now sports a shiny new codecache and a libgd binding. A
new loadable module (Pure Lua and Hybrid lua/C) has been added. The libdbi
binding is settling down and all Aranha extensions are now built as
loadable modules. More documentation has been added.

About: Avidemux is a graphical tool to edit AVI. It allows you to
multiplex and demultiplex audio to/from video. It is able to cut video,
import BMP, MJPEG, and MPEG video, and encode them. You can also process
video with included filters. It requires divx4linux and GTK/GDK.

Changes: A lot of little fixes, including false error message when
resizing to VCD, multiple mpeg export, compiling with xvid CVS, and more.

[004] - bogofilter 0.11.1.2 (Current)
  by MA (http://freshmeat.net/users/mandree/)
  Saturday, March 8th 2003 06:28

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Text Processing :: Filters

About: Bogofilter is a Bayesian spam filter. In its normal mode of
operation, it takes an email message or other text on standard input, does
a statistical check against lists of "good" and "bad" words, and returns a
status code indicating whether or not the message is spam. Bogofilter is
designed with fast algorithms (including Berkeley DB system), coded
directly in C, and tuned for speed, so it can be used for production by
sites that process a lot of mail.

Changes: bogoutil's broken maintenance mode and locking issues on machines
that don't want mmap() and fcntl() locking mixed have been fixed. The
documentation and FAQ have been updated. A division-by-zero which
triggered SIGFPE aborts on some machines has been fixed. The ./configure
script now prints clearer messages when libdb*.so is not in the library
search path (fixing the unspecific "can't get size of unsigned short"
issue).

[027] - Kodo JDO 2.4.2
  by Chox (http://freshmeat.net/users/neelan/)
  Saturday, March 8th 2003 07:33

About: Kodo JDO allows you to write database calls using Java statements
instead of SQL statements, by supporting the Java Data Objects standard
for transparent persistence. It is the most complete implementation of the
JDO specification for relational data stores, and comes with tools for
producing a schema from an object model, producing class files from an
existing schema, and a performance pack (distributed caching and statement
batching) that improves performance by 15 - 30 times. It supports most
relational databases, application servers, and IDEs, and reduces the total
coding effort by 20-40%.

Changes: Eclipse, WSAD, Sun ONE Studio, and NetBeans integrations are now
generally available. The ProxyManager now includes capabilities to proxy
user-defined mutable field types that are not part of the JDO
specification. Several bugfixes were also made.

Games/Entertainment :: Arcade

About: LBreakout is a breakout game with nice effects, graphics, and
sounds. It's got a menu to configure a lot of things and a high score
chart. It can be played either by mouse or keyboard. New levels can also
be created, and most other aspects of the game can be customized.

Changes: If a levelset is selected in the menu, its highscore chart is
shown. The original levelsets have became the very first one in the list.
The score of all players is shown when the next player's turn begins in a
game with alternating multiple players. Furthermore, the default warp
limit has been increased to 80% to make the connection between it and the
blinking arrow clearer. Themes can now use an unlimited number of
backgrounds.

[032] - Logtalk 2.15.1
  by Paulo Moura (http://freshmeat.net/users/pmoura/)
  Saturday, March 8th 2003 21:15

Software Development :: Pre-processors

About: Logtalk is an open source object-oriented extension to the Prolog
programming language. Integrating logic programming with object-oriented
and event-driven programming, it is compatible with most Prolog compilers.
It supports both prototypes and classes. In addition, it supports
component-based programming through category-based composition.

Changes: This version features a new example, msglog, of using events and
monitors to record, replay, and print user messages. It corrects a typo in
the jEdit templates that resulted in syntax errors, and the wrong year
format in info/1 directive in all entity templates. The missing version
info key to jEdit prototype template was added, documentation of built-in
local methods self/1 and sender/1 was corrected, and documentation of
built-in local methods parameter/2 and this/1 was updated.

System :: Archiving :: Compression
System :: Archiving :: Packaging
System :: Installation/Setup

About: makeself is a small shell script that generates a self-extractable
compressed TAR archive from a directory. The resulting file appears as a
shell script, and can be launched as is. The archive will then uncompress
itself to a temporary directory and an arbitrary command will be executed
(for example, an installation script). This is pretty similar to archives
generated with WinZip Self-Extractor in the Windows world.

Changes: This version fixes some major issues with standard Unix
compression (the "compress" command). There are also more bugfixes and
clean-ups related to extraction and verification of checksums.

alongside the system and third-party packages has been implemented. This
release includes the ASDF defsystem utility, a sockets implementation, a
custom read-eval-print loop, and some efficient 32-bit numerical code.
Many bugs have been fixed, and optimizations have been made to the object

[071] - X10-wish GUI 1.2.2
  by Scott Hiles (http://freshmeat.net/users/whiles/)
  Saturday, March 8th 2003 13:35

Home Automation

About: This Java Client demonstrates the simplicity of creating a remote
control client/server capability for an X10 automated home controlled by a
Linux server with the X10-wish drivers installed. The socket server runs
on the same machine as the X10-wish drivers and the Java client can be run
on any machine with the Java runtime envrionment 1.3 (or higher)
installed.

Changes: This release includes the nearly completed x10home application,
as well as the very stable x10web application. This release allows the
user to create a virtual representation of the X10 network such that each
of the switch objects will simulate the network. The switches can be named
so that the network is more accessible to individuals with little X10
knowledge. x10home and x10web both run as standalone and as Web applets so
that the network can be controlled from any computer that can get to the
Web server.

  Saturday, March 8th 2003 19:38

Internet :: Log Analysis

About: "yaala" parses logfiles and generates very detailed statistics in

currently works with Apache's access-log format and the NCSA format (e.g.
Apache's combined log) as well as Squid's access logfile format.

Changes: Support for GD::Graph has been added. All tables now show
percentages in addition to the absolute amount. A parser for postfix
