[001] - A practical lambda-calculator 2003.03 (Arithmetics)
  by Oleg (http://freshmeat.net/users/olegk47/)
  Thursday, March 6th 2003 23:26

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Interpreters

About: A practical lambda-calculator is a normal-order evaluator for the
untyped lambda-calculus, extended with convenient commands and shortcuts
to make programming in it more productive. Shortcuts are distinguished
constants that represent terms. Commands define new shortcuts, activate
tracing of all reductions, compare terms modulo alpha-conversion, print
all defined shortcuts and evaluation flags, etc. Terms to evaluate and
commands are entered at a read-eval-print-loop (REPL) "prompt" or
"included" from a file by a special command. A Haskell branch is an
embedding of the lambda calculator (as a domain-specific language) into
Haskell. The calculator can be used interactively within Hugs or GHCi.

Changes: This version introduces P-numerals, which are arithmetically more
convenient and efficient numerals than Church numerals. P-numerals are a
functional equivalent of a list data structure. A solution to a bluff
combinator puzzle in Lambda calculus was added. Lambda arithmetics were
re-written in the notation of the lambda calculator in Haskell. A
validation test suite was also added.

  Thursday, March 6th 2003 13:33

Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: CD Audio :: CD Ripping
Multimedia :: Sound/Audio :: Players :: MP3

About: abcde is a frontend to cdparanoia, wget, cd-discid, id3, and your
favorite Ogg/MP3/Flac encoder (Oggenc is the default). It grabs an entire
CD and converts each track to Ogg/MP3/Flac, then comments or ID3-tags each
file, all with one command. It supports multiple output in a single CD
read, volume normalization, gapless encoding (with Lame), parallelization,
SMP, HTTP proxies, customizable filename organization and munging,
playlist generation, and remote distributed encoding via distmp3.

Changes: This release adds a documentation cleanup and small changes from
2.0.3-0.2. This is a "Works For Me (TM)" release, so report problems if
found.

  by Holger Kiehl (http://freshmeat.net/users/hkiehl/)
  Thursday, March 6th 2003 01:12

Communications
Internet :: File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
System :: Systems Administration

About: AFD is a program to automatically distribute files either locally
or to remote hosts. The files are distributed by using FTP or SMTP, and
can be sent in parallel and with priority. It provides a GUI to monitor
and control the distribution and extensive logging of all activities.

Changes: In this version, new hosts now get displayed correctly in
afd_ctrl dialog. The directory option "delete unknown files" now works
correctly if the time was specified behind this option. A bug in the
transfer log that sometimes did not show the number of files and bytes
when an error occurred was fixed. The receive log now shows duplicated
messages correctly. A new option, grib2wmo, was added to convert grib
files to WMO container files. There were also new options, -m and -mr,
added to show_stat.

[005] - ArX 1.0pre5
  by wlandry (http://freshmeat.net/users/wlandry/)
  Thursday, March 6th 2003 14:27

Software Development :: Version Control

About: ArX is a distributed revision control system that features
distributed repositories, fancy merging, support for renaming, unobtrusive
operation, a Web interface, and revision libraries. It consists of a
collection of shell scripts and C code, and brings together many shell
utilities, SSH, HTTP, diff, and patch.

Changes: The manual has been completely updated to reflect the current
state of ArX. OS X 10.1 seems to work. update-distributions no longer
includes the control files by default. The --control option will include
them. Automated ChangeLog support has been removed. Using archives that
already contain them should work fine, they just won't be updated anymore.
How inventory decides what to print out actually makes sense now. The key
combination C-x v i in the emacs mode no longer prompts for a file name,
just using the current file or directory.

  Thursday, March 6th 2003 05:19

Communications :: Email :: Filters
Text Processing :: Filters

About: Bogofilter is a Bayesian spam filter. In its normal mode of
operation, it takes an email message or other text on standard input, does
a statistical check against lists of "good" and "bad" words, and returns a
status code indicating whether or not the message is spam. Bogofilter is
designed with fast algorithms (including Berkeley DB system), coded
directly in C, and tuned for speed, so it can be used for production by
sites that process a lot of mail.

Changes: Reading the user's configuration files was fixed. The "-u" option
was fixed to actually do something. Missing documentation and "-h" help
output were added for bogolexer and bogoutil.

[008] - Code striker 1.6.5

  Thursday, March 6th 2003 14:36

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries
Software Development
Software Development :: Quality Assurance

About: Codestriker is a Perl CGI script that is used for performing code
reviews in a collaborative fashion, as opposed to using patches sent in
unstructured emails. Authors create code review topics, and the nominated
reviewers are automatically notified by email. Reviewers can view the
proposed diff in plain text mode, coloured-diff mode, and can also view
the original and new files that comprise the review in their entirety when
Codestriker is linked with CVS. Comments are made on a per-line basis, and
comments submitted by the other reviewers can be viewed as they are
created. Emails are sent to the appropriate parties when comments are
created. The author is free to submit comments against the review
comments. The end result is a structured set of review comments instead of
a pile of unstructured emails. Codestriker also features the ability to
search over existing topics in a variety of ways.

Changes: The diff parser was modified to handle diffs of the form: "cvs
diff -uN -r TAG1 -r TAG2". This allows code reviews to occur for different
development practices, for example, if separate branches are used for
development, which are then reviewed, before collapsing into the mainline
branch.

  by Dave Ewart (http://freshmeat.net/users/daveewart/)
  Thursday, March 6th 2003 14:41

Software Development
Text Processing :: Filters
Utilities

About: ColorDiff is a wrapper for diff. It produces the same output as
diff, but with colored syntax highlighting at the commandline to improve
readability. The output is similar to how a diff-generated patch might
appear in Vim or Emacs with the appropriate syntax highlighting options
enabled. The colors schemes can be read from a central configuration file
or from a local user ~/.colordiffrc file.

Changes: Addition of support for 'context' diffs, and a fix for a 'colour
over-run' problem when shell prompt has no colours defined.

System :: Monitoring

About: Echelog is a modular monitoring system. Agents, distributed on
computers over network, monitor the state of hosts and the network, and
collected data are securely transferred (using SSL protocol) to special
servers where they are processed and stored.

Changes: This release focuses on improvements in on-line filtering. Users
can now easily group messages by size, originator's IP address, agent type
and instance, etc. Text information (including text fields in message
headers) can be matched with enhanced regular expressions. Log reader
handling of rotated log files is now smarter as it can even read
information appended to already rotated files (favorite syslog/logrotate
technique). The binary storage module is now more paranoid to avoid a
possibility of a log corruption.

[021] - EMS MySQL Utils 1.3.0.1 (Import)
  by EMS HiTech (http://freshmeat.net/users/DKovt/)
  Thursday, March 6th 2003 07:25

About: EMS MySQL Utils are powerful data management utilities for MySQL
server which make your work with the server much easier and faster.
Currently, MySQL Utils includes MySQL Export, a powerful tool for MySQL
data export, and MySQL Import, a utility for quickly importing data to
MySQL tables.

Changes: Import Modes have been implemented, allowing you to either update
these records, delete them, insert only new records, and more. The ability
to use the native MySQL LOAD DATA function was implemented, which makes
import much faster. The possibility of defining the type of adding data to
the destination table (insert or append) was added. The possibility of
adding new extensions to the list of supported import types and the
ability to flexibly define the import type for any file have been
implemented. An 'Ignore deleted records' option was added to the DBF
importing feature. Other improvements were also made.

[023] - Enterprise Volume Management System 1.9.1 (Development)
  by IBM Linux Technology Center (http://freshmeat.net/users/ibmltc/)
  Thursday, March 6th 2003 13:47

System :: Filesystems

About: The Enterprise Volume Management System (EVMS) Project has the goal
of providing unparalleled flexibility and extensibility in managing
storage. It represents a new approach to logical volume management, as the
architecture introduces a plug-in model that allows for easy expansion or
customization of various levels of volume management.

Changes: The Clustering/High Availability plugin now fully supports remote
administration. Necessary reassignment support has been added to
cluster-segment-manager, as well as support for failover and
loss-of-quorum recovery. Offline movement now supports Drive-Linking. The
text mode UI is almost functionality complete. Initial support has been
added for snapshoting using Device-Mapper (2.4 kernels only). The
Bad-Block-Relocation Device-Mapper module has been reworked.

[024] - ErfurtWiki R1.00c
  by milky (http://freshmeat.net/users/milky/)
  Thursday, March 6th 2003 23:36

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content

About: ErfurtWiki is a small Wiki engine implemented in PHP which stores
its pages in a MySQL database or via a flat file backend. The Wiki source
parsing is rather complete but is very extensible. It stands out from
other Wikis in that it does not define the whole page layout itself;
instead it allows for very quick integration into an existing Web site.
The whole 'library' is fully contained in one script file. Additionally,
it can cache referenced images. The simplicity of the image uploading
function makes it also a good choice as 'lite' CMS for private homepages.

Changes: Markup for tables is now included and multiple bugfixes regarding
HTML preserving were made. The simple variant of InterWiki links was
implemented. The db_flat_files interface now utilizes the newly introduced
general plugin interface, which allows extension of ewiki while the core
remains in just one script. The plugin interface further collapses
different configuration variables. Chars that are allowed in page names
are now configurable (for localization purposes). Some markup/inline
plugins were backported from a new (ewiki-based) partner project.

[028] - Flate library 1.4.2 (Stable)
  by Fabien Menemenlis (http://freshmeat.net/users/pessimist/)
  Thursday, March 6th 2003 14:45

Internet :: WWW/HTTP :: Dynamic Content :: CGI Tools/Libraries

About: Flate is a template library used to deal with HTML code in CGI
applications. The library includes C and Perl support. All HTML code is
put in an external file (the template) and printed using the library
functions: variables, zones (parts to be displayed or not), and tables
(parts to be displayed 0 to n times). Using this method, you don't need to
modify/recompile your application when modifying HTML code, printing order
doesn't matter in your CGI code, and your CGI code is much cleaner.

  Thursday, March 6th 2003 14:33

Text Processing :: Linguistic

About: The glrParser template library is a programmer's tool for creation
of syntactical analysers which works with the GLR(0) algorithm. The
library can handle wide ambiguous grammars containing the epsilon-rules.
GLR is generalization of the LR algorithm (published by Marasu Tomita)
which can handle ambiguous grammars. The library implements the GLR(0)
algorithm but defines neither the method of reading input nor the actions
to make when making reductions. The format of the grammar files is defined
but it is easy to make the parser to handle different ones without
modifiyng the library itself.

Changes: Simplification of the algorithm for making reductions, and some
memory optimizations in the code for the GLR(0) table.

[037] - GluCat 0.1.2
  by Paul C. Leopardi (http://freshmeat.net/users/leopardi/)
  Thursday, March 6th 2003 14:26

Scientific/Engineering :: Mathematics
Software Development :: Libraries

About: GluCat is a library of template classes which model the universal
Clifford algebras over the real or complex fields, with arbitrary
dimension and arbitrary signature. Technically, what GluCat implements is
a model of each Clifford algebra corresponding to each non-degenerate
quadratic form up to a maximum set by the user. GluCat classes are
designed to be used as template parameters for other template libraries,
such as Blitz++, deal.II, Matrix Template Library, and POOMA.

Changes: This release uses a generalized Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) to
map between framed_multi<> and matrix-multi<> at high dimensions. This
greatly speeds up operations in higher dimensions, for example
multiplication and division. A new ./transforms subdirectory includes a
test program for the generalized FFT. Also, the build process has been
updated to make better use of autoconf and automake. As a result, you
should no longer need to edit Makefile.in.

[047] - Java Serialization to XML 2 0.4.0
  by Brendan Macmillan (http://freshmeat.net/users/yow/)
  Thursday, March 6th 2003 11:47

Communications
Database
Database :: Front-Ends

About: Java Serialization to XML 2 allows you to convert Java objects into
streams of XML and back again. Using it is as easy as replacing
"ObjectOutputStream" with "JSX.ObjectWriter" to convert objects to XML,
and replacing "ObjectInputStream" with "JSX.ObjectReader" to convert XML
into objects. JSX subclasses Java's serialization classes, so it can be
used in their place with the same simple power. This allows you to check
and correct your distributed, persisted, and logged object data, and
process it with XSLT, SAX, and DOM. JSX handles all objects, complex
object graphs, new classes, old classes, and evolving classes. JSX even
handles classes that do not implement the "Serializable" interface.

Changes: JSX.ObjOut2 has been completely rewritten for simplicity and
speed, and renamed as JSX.ObjectWriter. This implementation also now
respects writeReplace() methods of objects being serialized, including
inherited writeReplace() methods, and chained replacements.

It will extract the following information: imports, page-level
documentation, parameters used by the page, HTML links to/from other
pages, and static/dynamic includes to/from other pages. It also supports
integration with JavaDoc documenation generated from .java files.

Changes: This release fixes a problem which caused the page description to
not show up in the generated documentation.

  Thursday, March 6th 2003 14:31

Software Development :: Quality Assurance
Software Development :: Testing

About: The Linux Test Project is a joint project with SGI, IBM, OSDL,
Bull, and Wipro Technologies with a goal to deliver test suites to the
open source community that validate the reliability, robustness, and
stability of Linux. The project consists of well over 950 individual
testcases and a test driver to automate execution of the tests.

Changes: A new area for keeping up with fixes for known blocking problems
in 2.5 kernel releases has been added, and can be found at
http://ltp.sourceforge.net/errata. All tests from the Open POSIX*
Testsuite have been ported and merged in. New test scripts have been added
for system stress and LVM testing. The entire suite has been updated to
support non-root 'make install'. A new API was added to allow test
creators to easily query the kernel version of the test machine. Changes
were implemented to support GCC 3.3 standards.

[058] - Liquid War 5.5.9

Games/Entertainment :: Real Time Strategy

About: Liquid War is a truly original multiplayer wargame. You control an
army formed with thousands of pixels (fighters) which look like liquid and
try to eat your opponent. You can play against a primitive NPC/AI or up to
5 other human players. Network play is available.

Changes: All calls to sprintf have been replaced by calls to snprintf,
which is more secure. The server plays a little system "beep" when clients
connect, and can also launch an external program on client connection. The
client can display an approximate "server ping time" and use HTTP 1.1 to
contact the metaserver. CPUs do not attack humans exclusively anymore.
Three new maps are available. The game can now be compiled and run on Mac
OS X (no binaries available for download yet).

[059] - LooperDB 0.5
  by Mohit Muthanna (http://freshmeat.net/users/muthanna/)
  Thursday, March 6th 2003 21:35

System :: Networking :: Monitoring

About: LooperDB is a secure, multithreaded alert database used primarily
for network/security management. It is indended to be used as a central
MoM (manager-of-managers) platform to collect, consolidate, and correlate
event messages. When coupled with looper, LooperDB can provide the
framework for a sophisticated alert management infrastructure.

Changes: This release includes support for dlmalloc on OSes with older
(less efficient) memory allocation functions, separates the database
layer, which means support for other databases can be easily added, and
has completely rewritten the authentication subsystem, which now runs as a
separate server thread. This means that only one instance of the auth DB
is open, speeding up connection times, etc. There is improved thread
safety and concurrency across DB calls, a new command 'set' was added to
get/set ldb client environment variables, a new housekeeping database, and
history tables (presently unused). The logging and error handling was
improved.

  by UMich RSUG (http://freshmeat.net/users/rsug/)
  Thursday, March 6th 2003 21:38

Security
System :: Clustering/Distributed Networks
System :: Installation/Setup

About: radmind is a suite of Unix command-line tools and a server designed
to remotely administer the file systems of multiple Unix machines. At its
core, radmind operates as a tripwire. It is able to detect changes to any
managed filesystem object, e.g. files, directories, links, etc. However,
radmind goes further than just integrity checking: once a change is
detected, radmind can optionally reverse the change. Each managed machine
may have its own loadset composed of multiple, layered overloads. This
allows, for example, the operating system to be described separately from
applications. Loadsets are stored on a remote server. By updating a
loadset on the server, changes can be pushed to managed machines.

Changes: This version adds support for OpenSSL random files. lcreate no
longer verifies transcript lines for negative transcripts. ktcheck -n
reports correct exit value if special file is wrong. --with-radminddir is
now fixed to configure an alternate radmind directory. #include
<sys/time.h> was added for Linux 2.2. STARTTLS is now more SMTP-like.
Automount directories were added to the example negative transcript. The
invalid client error messages were removed from the server. The exchange()
prototype matches Solaris. A NULL was changed to 0 in the connect socket
call.

Changes: There are two complete translated and NEW languages: Italian and
Norwegian. in the Spanish language the admin-interface is almost complete
translated. For security-conscious sysads a SHA1-admin-password encryption
was added. The rest are some minor bugfixes/changes.

[116] - Yet Another Advanced Log Analyzer 0.6.0 (Experimental)

Internet :: Log Analysis

About: "yaala" parses logfiles and generates very detailed statistics in
HTML format. It features two different output types with different amount
of information: one for webmasters/sysadmins that would like to get some
very interesting (but not necessarily useful) information about their
audience, and one that is more likely to be presented on a website. It
currently works with Apache's access-log format and the NCSA format (e.g.
Apache's combined log) as well as Squid's access logfile format.

Changes: Huge parts of the internal data storage have been rewritten from
scratch, which fixes a lot of bugs. The code has been cleaned up a lot in
general, but most notably in the debug system. A new output module has
been added which emulates the look of the 0.4.2 version.

[117] - ziproxy 1.2

Internet :: Proxy Servers

About: ziproxy is a forwarding (non-caching) proxy that gzips text and
HTML files, and reduces the size of images by converting them to low
quality JPEGs. It is intended to increase the speed for dial-up Internet
connections. Most browsers support gzipped content, so Web pages appear as
normal, but as they are only a fraction of their original page size, pages
are much quicker to load. Even for browsers that don't support it, hints
how to overcome it using SSH port forwarding are included. Images are
reduced in size by an average of one third, with only marginal visible
image quality loss. It should be used with inetd/xinetd, but if you can't
use them, a simple replacement "netd" is provided.

Changes: The speed of gzip compression and HTML processing has been
improved. There is configuration file support.
