If you recall, when this first began Colin suggeted that rpmforge-release gets
installed so that the dries channel gets automagically placed in smarts
channel repo and that in turn would make things easy to get. If you didn't do
this manually, then yes, it more than likely came with smart as well.

Gentle readers... please bear with me... this really isn't off topic but, bang
on topic. We use kde-redhat and expect that kde-redhat's rpms are installed
on the system and functioning. This will demonstrate, without prejudice, if
Claude will accept my help, that we as kde-redhat users have a problem. And,
its serious, because as apt-get gets phased out there will be no way at
present to ensure that we are getting kde-redhat RPMs. I promise, I will try
to make this as short as possible.

Unfortuneately, smart has no documentation, as yet, for anything. And that
includes prioritization. Almost all the responses to comments made in the
mailing lists that have received, in short, "that's interesting" and "good
idea".

In yum priorities work, by placing which repository you want to get packages
from "first" to be placed in yum.conf in the order that you want them
searched. Unfortuneatley, there is no way to tell yum that if a package
exists in the kde-redhat repository to get the packages exclusively from that
repository and ignore all others. Which means that higher versions existing
in other repos will get installed. Because kde-redhat for fc4 relies on repos
from fc4 extras conflicts arise where packages such kde-artwork, or
kde-network, or digikam, etc from kde-extras if yum determines that the
version of package is a more recent version. As such, and at best, features
that you expect to work might not work without understanding why. At worst,
things might not work at all.

Smart is a little different but, essentially the problem persists there as
well. Priorities work by setting priority values inside individual channel
files. This setting seems to be logical in that whats supposed to happen, as
best as I can determine from the FAQ at smartpm, setting a higher number for
the priority should raise the priority level of the channel. 0 being default
priority and a negative number -1 being ignore the channel all together. In
part this works.

Setting the kde-redhat channels to a priority of 10 will in fact trigger
exclusivity. However, once I set, priority on any other channel, (ie 9 for
freshrpms) then things seem to be broken. And suddenly the superseeding
versions from fc4 extras reappear.

apt-get prioritization seems to work as long as the files in the base
directory are in order (Rex????). The documentation is better than most and
can be found on the man pages if apt is installed on your computer.

Essentially prioritization works via catagorization. In short, setting the
priority of a repo to 1001 will make that repo top priority to the exclusion
of all others. There should only be one of those (We're getting there Claude
we have one more step before I will ask you to download and install the
updates to harmonize your system). Essentially, lowering the priority numbers
for the other repositories used will lower the level of exclusivity. However,
this is not the end of the story, because as mentioned, apt-get
prioritization also categorizes its priorities (read the man pages).

Trying to make this as short as possible. If a package comes exclusively from
a repository that has a lower priority it will get installed. If that same
repository has a supersceeding version it will be ignored in favor of the
package that comes from the higher prioritized repository. Once the general
priorities are set, then, if required individual packages can also be
prioritzed. And in apt-get this works.

I hope this explanation is clear

Eli

I reinstalled FC4 on my machine (DELL Inspiron 8200) 3 days ago and I
did a straight update of KDE to 3.4.3 from kde-redhat. I haven't done
any configurations of my desktop at all, everything was stock but after
the KDE upgrade the kmix window pops up again at every login either root
or user? It's rather irritating and I don't know how to fix it because
kmix should only be running in tray (has been set to that). Any ideas?

Kind Regards

Hi Rex,

I'm using the closed source nvidia driver, nvidia-glx-1.0.7676-0.lvn.2.3 with
a 6800GT, two flat panel, twin-view.
Can run any of the *.kss GL screensavers, but none of the GL ones from
xscreensaver.

Errors on the VT when trying to launch GL screensavers with
kdeartwork-3.4.3-1.0.fc3.kde ......

KMix->Settings->Configure KMix
*check* Dock into Panel
*check* Enable system tray volume control

OR, if you don't want kmix *at all*, close kmix window, exit kmix system
tray icon, save your KDE session (see KControl->KDE
Components->Session Manager for details on session management).

Is the missing kdeartwork-icons an oversight, or is it not a part of the
