Thanks for the input - so I could verify that the file is actually version 
1.2.61. As Michael said the feature I looked for has been disabled :(

Still I wonder about the other things. The marked area in detailed-listview 
still fools me sometimes. 
From what I read in the bug (http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=88964) it's 
been in CVS since end of october but I honestly on'T see any change from 3.3 
in CVS -I've used the patch before so I understand that the new behaviour 
might not be wanted by other developers?
Maybe this could be fixed in a way that does not alter the way how files are 
selected but only changes the visual area of selection...

The thing with the length of filenames in MultiColumnView is that they 
actually appear to be shorter in 3.4CVS to me than they are in 3.3 - and I 
can't find a way to allow for longer filenames.
