It works over here, so there must be a difference in our configuration
I checked this, and i use this option:
menu 'view->attachements->intelligent'
With that option enabled the images are embedded

If i change this to 'icons', the images are no longer embedded in the e-mails
If i change this to 'embedded', the images are embedded in the e-mails
If i chahge this to 'hidden', the images are gone again :)
