Subject: Bug#30066: selecting default window manager causes first-time login to fail
From: jharris () 30doradus ! org

[Download RAW message or body]
Package: kdm
Version: unknown (using KDE 2.2.0 beta1)
Severity: normal
Installed from: Linux-Mandrake 8.0 (Traktopel) - Unsupported
Compiler: gcc version 2.96 20000731 (Linux-Mandrake 8.0 2.96-0.48mdk)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.4.3-20mdk
OS/Compiler notes:
After a new installation of KDE 2.2Beta1, I rebooted, using the graphical login \
manager (kdm). I typed in my username and password, which were accepted (no error \
message about wrong username or passwd). The screen went blank for a few seconds, \
then the kdm login manager appeared again. Repeated login attempts also failed.
Finally, I changed the window manager selection from "Default (use last session)" to \
"KDE", and was then able to login. The "Default" selection worked on subsequent \
login attempts.
My guess is that "Default" does not initially point at any WM, so the login fails. \
It should point to KDE by default.
cheers,
Jason
