It is organized similarly in Poland e.x. .edu.pl, .org.pl or .com.pl but
very many sites in Poland have http://www.name_of_companion.pl and some of
them have alias http://www.name_of_companion.com.pl.
Our site has address http://www.wp.pl and we have many services like
abc.wp.pl cafe.wp.pl and so on. So in Kongueror it is impossible set
cookie on .wp.pl but on every service.
For the same reasons as you described MS Internet Explorer 5.0 prohibitied
cookies for domains shorter then 5 digits. Our company contacted with
Microsoft not to prohibitied such domains.
Since MS IE 5.5 there has been no restrictions for short domains.
A lot of users have MSIE 5.0. We have to use special techniques to set
cookies on our all services at once whilest logging.

In my private opinions it is not wise to set cookies on such commercial or
academic domain names. Why company do not use it's name plus such
domain. Don't they know others can read such cookies ?
