Nested tables contain spurious new lines in their rendering.
For example:

This nested table incorrectly stacks up the A and B
<table border=0>
<tr><td>
<Table align=left><tr><td nowrap align=center>
A B
</td></Table>
</td></table>

This non-nested table does not.
<Table align=left><tr><td nowrap align=center>
A B
</td></Table>
