I added three application icons to the panel, located to the right of
the virtual desktop "One" .. "Four" buttons.  Then I removed three icons
from the left of the virtual desktop buttons, such as the "personal
folder" and "online help" icons.  The application icons I had previously
added shifted to the left so they appeared on top of the virtual desktop
buttons.
This makes the desktop buttons unusable until the application icons are
manually moved out of the way.  Ctrl-F1..Ctrl-F4 still work though.
