Subject: Bug#1349: KDE crashes by using the plot editor in MATLAB 5.3

Package: kbase, ksupp, klibs and qtlib
Version: 1.1-16, 1.1-14, 1.1-16 and 1.44-5

I am using SuSE Linux 6.1 with KDE 1.1 consisting of the packages
mentioned above and MATLAB 5.3 for Linux, which has a plot editor as new
feature. When I invoke the plot editor and try to select an object in
the figure the window manager crashes and switches to the login window
of kdm. After that I can login as usual and the system works as usual.

Unfortunately I have no error message printed or logged.

You can cause the failure by doing the following:

Start MATLAB 5.3 for Linux and type

     plot([1:10].^2);

at the command prompt. After that a figure window will appear. Push the
button with the arrow directing up to the left corner in the button bar.
This button is called 'Enable Plot Editing'. Then you move the mouse
pointer on the plot itself and click the right mouse button to invoke a
popup menu where you select the entry 'Properties...'. At this time the
window manager crashes and you will find yourself at the login prompt of
kdm.

According to my opinion, this problem is KDE 1.1 specific because of the
following reasons:

1. In earlier times I used MATLAB 5.3 with SuSE Linux 5.3 with KDE 1.0
(kbase-1.0-7, ksupp-1.0-4, klibs-1.0-5 and qtlib-1.33-8) and this
problem did not happen.
2. When I use another window manager (fvwm2 and afterstep) this problem
does not happen.
3. A collegue of mine uses MATLAB 5.3 with Red Hat 5.2 and he is
reportimg just the same problems with KDE 1.1, but has no problems with
other window managers nor with KDE 1.0.

Finally I would like to cite the bug report #1109 from Jason A.
Crosswhite, subject 'Can crash KDE by using new MATLAB 5.3 plot editor'
form the 30th of March 1999. He reported just the same problem.

I hope my descriptions are detailed enough and will help you to fix the
problem.

Carsten Otto
