As the above message indicates the virtual font file is not found.
Setting the environment variable VFFONTS should suffice:

export VFFONTS=/usr/share/texmf/fonts/vf//

Note the double slashes at the end to specify recursive searches.

If you use a newer tetex you can also use:

export PKFONTS=`kpsepath pk` VFFONTS=`kpsepath vf`

This will use the proper settings from your tex system and also set the
path for pk fonts, so you don't need to set it in the preferences
dialog.

The above settings are needed for newer tex systems that use kpathsea
version 3.2 as kdvi-0.4.3 includes version 2.6 which is not quite
compatible.
