I installed the debian package version of kde (latest version, 
1.1, with qt-1.43) and noticed that I couldn't change the 
wallpaper (the background editor in the KDE Control 
wouldn't even start).

Why? 
Answer: "kcmdisplay background" (the thing that is executed when 
running the background editor) tries to open /usr/share/wallpapers 
when the wallpapers reallyare located in /usr/share/wallpaper 
(notice, the missing s!). The problem might arise in the 
kdewallpaper (1.1-19990207) deb package (installs the 
wallpapers into the wrong dir).

Fix: 
Rename /usr/share/wallpaper to /usr/share/wallpapers
or make a symbolic link.

I am using Debian 2.0 kernel version 2.0.36
