Subject: Bug#1132: major problems with several KDE apps under Debian Slink

sorry I've mentioned several apps but I get the impression the problems
are inter-related.
I suspect that a couple of the files in
      kdelibs2g_1.1_19990207-2_i386.deb
or possibly
     kdesupport0g_1.1_19990207-1_i386.deb files
are defective but am not sure of their contents.

It's relevant to say I'm new to Debian as of this release (slink) but
had no problems running everything in KDE under Red Hat 5.1 and 5.2
kernels 2.0.35 and 2.0.36 respectively.

currently running the supplied Debian compiled kernel 2.0.36 and when I
installed Debian (2.1r2) I selected the 'home pc' (or somesuch) on
multi-cd set (which is correctly installed - eventually!)

these applications don't run from start menu, so, while running as
non-root and typing from bash shell in kvt

bash-2.01$ kedit
kedit: error in loading shared libraries: /usr/X11R6/lib/libkfile.so.2:
undefined symbol: __pure_virtual

bash-2.01$ kasteroids
kedit: error in loading shared
libraries: /usr/X11R6/lib/libQwSpriteField.so.1: undefined symbol:
__pure_virtual

bash-2.01$ kfind
kfind: error in loading shared libraries: /usr/X11R6/lib/libkfile.so.2:
undefined symbol: __pure_virtual

bash-2.01$ kppp
kedit: error in loading shared libraries: kppp: undefined symbol:
__pure_virtual

many other apps seem to have problems which I suspect are all library
file related.

.............................

it gets worse however...

if I rename /etc/ppp/options to hide it and create a new empty options
file as kppp seems to prefer and set up ISP details correctly, at the
point at which pppd is invoked the system crashes. permanently.

I've previously set up pppconfig and therefore (correctly I believe)
resolv.conf, hosts.conf

for the sake of brevity at this point I won't detail everything unless
requested. (this report is quite long enough I'm sure!)

I would add that I'm pretty new to Linux so cannot perhaps be as helpful
as required (although I'm the former SA for a Honeywell GCOS site (Unix
and GCOS have a sort of family tree) and have oodles of experience in
other OS's so I'm not a complete newbie in every sense!)

if any further information is required please feel free to contact me at
markb1@net.ntl.com

I am happy to help and would like to mention I am a huge fan of KDE

regards
