The BROKEN message means that the state gets broken (because a client got
activated) - it's printed even if the state isn't active, so that's no problem.

However, either the second patch did not apply or the layer of the desktop (or
any other window) doesn't get updated while the state is active. It should
actually never work...
The patch applied for sure? There was no error message (about failed hunks)?
