The biggest problem here is the security risk. If I shred a file, it may remain
in the index. Or, as someone has said, it may index a file on an encrypted
filesystem, and write the index on an unencrypted one.

This shouldn't be enabled by default without asking the user or encrypting the
index. This applies to any desktop search system. It exposes users to a
security liability without their knowledge. Actually I'm glad it ate my CPU,
otherwise I may have not noticed it.
