Distorted?!? Well, this is clearly not true. At least not for the 10 soundcards
I personally know. If you get distortion when pcm or master sliders are not
parallel, please report that to the soundcard driver developers (then you have
a severe hardware or driver issue).

Also the "Lower quality" argument  is nonsense in my opinion. Sound quality has
not much to do with the volume. The sound is louder or softer, thats it. Sound
quality is basically influenced by mixing (software and hardware) and clipping
(which leads to distortion). Clipping happens if the sound is too loud and can
also happen if you only play one stream. Best bet is then to keep one slider
limited (e.g. Master), and working only with the other slider (e.g. PCM),
