I've been using Xdialog (from GTK) as a substitute since then. The current
state is when I am testing with kate (started in .xprofile, so after login but
before the splash screen): Typing in the main text widget works as expected. In
dialogs such as from the settings or "About Kate", the same problem keyboard
problem exists. Keyboard input seems to land in the main text widget or gets
lost (or lands somewhere I did not notice); both behaviors happened, but I am
not sure what the difference was.
My theory is that without a window manager handling keyboard input for modal
dialogs gets messed up somewhere deep in Qt or KDE.
I found this qdialog app on kde-apps.org, which I will try out next...
