I have a SUSE 9.3 with the KDE 3.4.1 update RPM's from SUSE.

I have similar problem synchronizing my Palm Tungsten E. Sometimes it works, \
sometimes it hangs. The kernel logs or the HAL device manager properly show the \
driver coming up with ttyUSB0 and ttyUSB1. I always use ttyUSB1, the other one \
doesn't seem to work. Tried speeds from 19200 up to 115200 with identical results, \
sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Everything worked fine on my SUSE 9.0 using KDE updates to 3.4.0. Most often I can \
force the whole thing to work by quitting the pilot daemon and restarting from the \
beginning.

All other USB devives I tested up to now worked just fine (USB 1.1 on an old ASUS \
P2B-DS), which include BlueTooth dongles and two different MP3-players.
