I have similar problem synchronizing my Palm Tungsten E. Sometimes it works, sometimes it hangs. The kernel logs or the HAL device manager properly show the driver coming up with ttyUSB0 and ttyUSB1. I always use ttyUSB1, the other one doesn't seem to work. Tried speeds from 19200 up to 115200 with identical results, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Everything worked fine on my SUSE 9.0 using KDE updates to 3.4.0. Most often I can force the whole thing to work by quitting the pilot daemon and restarting from the beginning. All other USB devives I tested up to now worked just fine (USB 1.1 on an old ASUS P2B-DS), which include BlueTooth dongles and two different MP3-players.
